Where do us beginners fit?

I am CPSA registered but have yet to do a reg comp but when I do will I be put in D class or AAA in case I've secretly become an unknown demon and am out to clean up on the prizes?

How far do people travel to do reg'd comps as they seem to be few and far between down here.

For me Wylye is about 100 miles which is about my limit

There's 100reg at the South West Shooting School tomorrow, near ish you. Take the plunge.

At moment agree up to 100 miles but am only getting back into it, when I used to shoot we went all over the country, my dad (rip) who drove me everywhere never shot a single shot!

A gang of us from my target rifle club are at Ashcombe tomorrow for our annual shotgun shoot.  As most of them can't hit a barn door with a shotgun I'm hoping to do better :D

Once I am shooting every week and improving I shall be there don't worry.

Even that is 146 miles round trip so probably 3 hours driving as the North Devon link road has loads of cameras and police cars.

Im in ramsbury wiltshire guess im a Lucky one as have fourcounties and gunsite 20 mins away and all these are within in an hours drive Upavon/urchfont/wylye/Westfield/weston wood ! aand I agreeclassifications are crap at the moment and need to be look at ..I shot at  3800 clays last count  and people who had only shot 700 in same class as me sandbagging it they know who they are I could shoot just one ground and probably get in AA but crap everywhere eles ! Oh well I think its a tricky one to govern but could be better than it is  ;)

Closest trap grounds for me are round trip..

130

140

270

Travel cost is an important cost factor for shooters, undoubtedly more so now than ever before.

We try to shoot a registered something or other practically every single week in the winter and approx two weeks out of three during the spring, summer and autumn.

For the grounds we travel to most, in order of distance : -

42 miles  -  Dartford

64 miles  -  Clacton

66 miles  -  A1 Club

78 miles  -  Barrow Heath

106 miles  -  Southdown

Those distances are EACH WAY don't forget. It is no small commitment.

I think we are confusing rankings and classifications. To be considered one of the top 20 in the country, you should accept that just doing your 4 closest/fave grounds for 1000 shots is not enough to get you there.

No matter what class your in- if you are C class, suddenly eat your greens and get a 93 average then you be shown in the listings!

The rankings (which are classification averages) are already based on at least 1000 targets for ESP? Or used to be. For this prestigious top 20 thing, I agree, 8 grounds and 1500 targets or similar would be in order.

Just to clarify i am talking normal ranking not top 20 which has different criteria anyway.

Not arguing but it could still be manipulated if say our chap shoots 700 targets at 7 grounds and hammers in lots of 90+ scores at a fave ground to make up the quota ?! What I'm saying is that it isn't really worth worrying about these things too much. I actually think Paulos has it right, the top 20 is pretty accurate on the whole, maybe one or two dreamers/manipulators but basically OK except for Sportrap for the reasons he mentions.

it all averages out.... besides no prizes for being in the top 20 unless you genuinely are that good.

And what is this world sporting alternative thingy?
