Well, after a 25 year gap, i had my first clay shoot on Sunday. To be honest, i have had my Shotguns and ticket for a couple of months but seem to have had a mental block in getting back into it.

I got back in touch with a few mates who i used to shoot with many years ago and was pleased they still did. I went to Copper Beeches near Worksop with them on Sunday and really enjoyed it, but i found my technique totally out of sorts.

Probably with age etc, many of the shots were fairly hard to what i remember, or i think my reflexes are not as quick as they were. All i learned as a youngster seemed to be a distant memory.

Couple of questions if any one could answer me, I have a Beretta Silver Pigeon and a Benelli Montefeltro, not expensive guns but seem ok.

What chokes should be in each gun for sporting? I haven't got a clue. The Beretta and Benelli chokes are identified by notches on the end of each choke.

The Beretta has a 2 notch and a 3 notch in and the Benelli a 4 notch. I know the chokes won't make me a better shot but ever little helps.

Also i am going to have a couple of lessons to try and improve my stance etc, not like riding a bike which you don't seem to forget. Any ideas where is best in South Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire?

Kind Regards Mark

Hi Mark, Choke markings are generally as follows:-

0 notches = cylinder or skeet

4 notches = 1/4

3 notches = 1/2

2 notches = 3/4

1 notch = Full

So the Beretta has 1/2 and 3/4 and the Benelli has a 1/4,

I would suggest,at this stage,you leave the Benelli with the 1/4 and fit the Beretta with 1/4 and 1/2 or with two 1/4's.

Vic.

Beretta chokes;

5 notch = skeet

4 = quarter

3 = half

2 = three quarter

1 = Full choke.......... Tightest

1/4 in both barrel's would be good

Vic, you beat me to it, you must have a faster finger

Hi Mark. Come and see us at Nottingham and District Gun Club, we have a few different instructors so there should be one to suit you.

Hope to see you soon.

I know it is foul! We are open weds through to sun, if you are free during the week it is the best time for a lesson but we can do Sunday afternoons too. We are open till dusk on weds and thurs.

Just pop up and see us, you can get a feel for the ground and if you like it book something in or just give us a call. It's £30 for a 50 clay lesson and that includes everything.

We are having a BBQ night tonight, it's normally pretty busy but there is usually a good atmosphere, if you fancy a soggy hot dog you would be very welcome :)

Yes, it does sound a good deal and will give Julia a ring next week. I have ordered a new 1/4 choke, £41 inc postage which i thought was ok. Others wanted £60 +

I like both guns i have bought but have not tried the Benelli yet, I am Left handed and a bit wary of the empty cartridge shell hitting the trap operator in the face.

Many thanks for the replys. I love this forum, seem to be friendly people.

If your left handed and the Auto is right handed..... sell it

Why??? My father has shot only right handed autos, he actually prefers them for duck, geese, sometimes pigeon easier and quicker to load! ;-)

But then remember he is a special case right handed at everything but shooting due to a left master eye!

Glen.

Tell the trap operator to move or are they sitiing on a manual trap?

Just thinking of the shell ejecting , the occasional flame and crap in the shooter's face Glen

True true I have to glasses no matter what anyway have a nightmare with autos if I don't due to my contact lenses! Shouldn't worry about hitting someone with the empties though!!! ..........That's a bonus point! ;-)

I never notice the shells getting chucked out to be honest. I always wear glasses though...
