Please read what I said again I did NOT say that I was behind someone in the cage with a loaded gun, I would never ever do that! - I was in one of 5 cages which are shot in order
Robert I hear you and agree, however Jake as I see it was commenting on the perception that it was in any way normal. Of course you would not do it, there are those out there who would however.

Michael

Robert.

Jake as I read it got rattled by the suggestion that loaded outside the cage was in some way considered normal, not that you would do it.
There was NEVER a suggestion that anyone was loaded outside the cage.

Is anyone prepared to voice an opinion as to whether one should be loaded but gun open, or not, when in a cage but not the shooter actually shooting at that moment but you will be when the other four in their adjacent cages have shot their pair?

I have decided not to do it again having copied other more experienced shooters and coaches but I am concerned that I might then be criticised for holding things up if I am being too picky.

I have shot a bit of sportrap, I do load and leave the gun open whilst waiting to shoot, it varies from straight away after my last shot or just as the shooter before me calls pull.

I don’t rest the gun on a rail, always grip the gun firmly, my finger is never near the trigger and the gun is only closed pointing down range.

As far as criticism from other shooters go tell them to bog off if they complain, it’s not a race and anything to do with safety is your call. You could always engage the safety catch and still have a loaded but open gun as it is quicker to flip off once you have closed the gun than load and will give you a greater degree of added protection if you are concerned.

I have just read the Internation Rules for Compak Sporting and this is what is said:-

During stand changeovers the shotguns must be "OPEN AND UNLOADED".

This is what we were doing.

The rules also state that there is a 7 second, at most, delay between the shooter before you firing and you calling for your target so time to focus only but not time to start loading the shotgun!

Apologies if I worried anyone and I appreciate that those who have not seen a Compak Sporting stand might not understand the position and how it works.

Sorry Robert, I now see it was a quote at the top of your post that I was referring to. I don't get quotes in a box anymore on the Forum reader I'm using.

Robert take all the time you need for your shot, what other people do is up to them as long as safety is paramount. Once it is your turn, pop in your shells, go through your pre shot routine and shoot. If this process annoys or messes with the heads of the others, then it is so much the better for you.

No doubt the alleged foot shooter is a daft bugger, and requires a serious lesson in gun safety, but it seems a touch out of line to take the p1ss out of him/her.

Phil*
I think he/she has just given him/her self that very lesson!

Robert I can't believe you loaded a gun behind someone... I thought you were a range officer!

Ed Please read the thread more carefully I certainly did not load a gun behind anyone -  Jake has already kindly agreed that he misread what had happened.  I was in a cage myself and was asking for advice whilst in there!

This has to be a conspiracy to wind me up and it's beginning to work

(quote name="paulos" post="48092" time="1355353015"]Loading behind the cage? Not the wisest thing to be doing...

3 shots in an auto? Behind the cage? You, sir, are a menace! Off with his feet.

I didn't realise it was an auto. That's even worse, IMHO. Beggars belief.
