Hey all,

having hard time figuring out "proper" gun mount (newb), ordered adjustable butt plate and will see where it goes from there but...

atm im mounting gun so top of the pad is on my collarbone, (coach is saying its wrong hence adjustable butt plate)

but i was looking at some pictures on ISSF website and from what i see different shooters mount gun differently....

From fully in the pocket (under collarbone) or "like me" on collarbone.

Is there a "wrong" way to mount a gun?

If the gun mount is consistent, doesn't cause pain and you are able to hit the target - is there a need to "improve"/fix it?

pretty much sums up my "issue", but as i understand having consistent gun mount + being albe to break targets is more important

then exact position of the gun

I agree with Ed , with the addition of , "consistently repeatable" ie No variations and mismounts.

You have to realise that most photographs and articles are posed photographs and articles written by people who really ought to know better  !

You only have to look at the different physiques of people such as the athletic build of George Digweed and the aneorexic build of Ed Solomons to compare.

I'm going to assume you shoot Trap (from your comments), so would pre-mount.

Other things to consider, would include -

Are you a "head down" or "head up" shooter? Meaning, do you mount the gun then bring your head down to meet it, or mount the gun to your face, with your head up.

I mount the gun to my cheek, which is always in the same place under my eye, with my head up, then slide the gun back to my shoulder.  Naturally, I have set the gun up to accomodate this.

Which is the other thing to consider...is the pad in full contact with your "shoulder area"?  If not, muzzle flip (up down) and discomfort, including cheek slap, might be the result.

Thank for comments!

Yes im shooting trap.

The occasional "Cheek slap" was happening so we went with adjustable buttplate (still waiting for it to come) and see if it helps.

Im "head down" shooter, first mount the gun then put my head/cheek on the stock and crawl to the front...

Im asking becasue the higher i mount the gun (with reasonable limits, like end plate around 1cm above my collarbone)

more comfortable im shooting but my coach says it's "kinda wrong" because it wont allow me for repeatition

(im aware im not 100% consistent with it yet, but thats why im practicing it right?)

and i should mount the gun in the pocket so i have a "refference" point and my mount is consistent (repeatable).

Guess i need to practice more at home to bring it in the same spot over and over again.

Make sure butt plate is in full contact with body.

Not care about "collarbone or not" mounting style.

Thanks again!

Exactly.  I think someone once said that, while you perhaps can't have a 100% perfect mount 100% of the time, you CAN have an at least 95% mount, 100% of the time.

"Head Up" shooting, might be worth a try. It depends what is causing discomfort...I found straining my neck and head down, was not good for me.

All I do, is look at my hold point, keep my head upright and still, then bring the gun up to my cheek and back into my shoulder.  Obviously, it doesn't look like 2 movements, but it comes to my face slightly before my shoulder.

Horses for courses, your mileage may vary, swings and roundabouts, different strokes, bucket and spade, Hansel and Gretel...

?

I have read the replies and after careful consideration , may I suggest getting a good coach and gunfitter to have a look at your gunmount and mounting procedure.

Because it sure as hell reads like you have issues which should have been noticed and corrected .

I don't wish to sound rude or arrogant , but I do not like to see people waste their money and end up totally confused and in the shooting wilderness.

No prob Salopian, im starting out so half of the drama is prolly made by me :p and in reality its not THAT bad..

but yea i will keep that in mind if it wont get "easier" for me in near(?) future

cheers!

Sounds to me as tho you're try to fit yourself to the gun rather than the gun to as the adjusto plate will allow.  You might not want to overly concern yourself with the mount until you have options to explore.

Unfortunately, too many people let gun fit dictate the mount when the exact opposite is the Path to Glory.  Decide how you want to hold the gun and then make it fit that form.  Or even get a different gun as an extreme.  How serious are you?

JMO of course

A few years ago we were shooting the British or English at Southdown. It was busy and our squad caught up with the squad in front  my mate was watching a bloke shooting at a gap in the hedge so he could see the shooter but not the clays and said to me " look at him with the kreighof he's mounting his gun nearly on his bicep he will never shoot well like that ". It was mark winser and guess who won it.

I'm just starting out, but my aim is to compete at higher lvl then just local league/range/etc ....(this might and should sound ambitious!)

I know what you mean and im going that way (i belive), ( i know how i want to hold my gun hence i.e. adjustable plate...)

Thanks for stating this - i needed this one :)
