what do people think of gun tests in the mags.

are they relevant when you only have one persons view

sporting gun used to ask  owners views on there gun but stopped

they could be so much better,

They could but they aren't bothered how good the gun is, just about circulation and ad revenue (cynical perhaps)but pretty much any gun gets a decent review, hence its pretty possible its totally pointless...

true, but how about having group tests like in the car or bike mags

guns in certain price brackets, sporters, trap guns

at least inject some humour into it. we all enjoy the social side of shooting and  meeting people what could be better

than a group of like minded people having a laugh and testing new guns thats got to be better than what we,ve got now

Clay shooting did similar with cartridges last year.

Why buy gun mags to get information on guns when you can get it here. Every word written by them that knows!

All the mags do reviews,

some have more ways of extoling the virtues of  certain "models" ;)

Cant remember any particular gun doing badly at  all.

One mag never seems to do guns in the lower end of the price spectrum

After listrneing to one film critic extoling the vitrues of two cinematic titans,i wnt to see both films

Yes they were both critically acclaimed,  one was ok for the first half, the second i thought was watchable, but not the blockbuster it was portrayed as .

Yes by all means read reviews,  but try them yourself,  that way you know 100%

:santa:

No then the advertising has won..

I'll take views off here to temper anything the mags come up with.

I wonder what the mags said about that Browning that everyone gets warned off!

The main thing that is under scrutiny during a mag review is the author. So they protect themselves..

In all my years of shooting I don't remember ever seeing what I would call a REALLY bad review of ANY gun!!!!

Les that because the reviews

A don't have the gun for long enough

B Have a remit from the gun supplier

C Don't want to upset current owners of said gun

what I will say about the very few gun reviews I have read. The reviewer normally speaks in plain English.... have you ever read a Hi Fi review ? They invent new words to confuse the reader as to what is being said... I used to be into that shoite as well :) you only twig when you have just spent thousands completely overhauled your kit to find that you are searching for something that is in audible to the normal human let alone one that has been abused by years of riding motorcycle sans ear plugs, shooting or what ever!

Oh, man!  If you think shooters are defective the way they look for that gimmick that will break one more target then you really need to see the effort in full effect the way audiophiles function.  I mean they have wives' tales about wives' tales.  The fantasy/reality ratio is about 8jillion/1!!  If you want to see Hogwarts physics at the max, look no further.  The guitar / amplifier people are not all that far behind.  Well, actually they trail a bit - I mean the audiophilers stand alone.

did I mention mind boggling stupid?

no offense intended of course, John

and, of course, gun tests just suk goat balls

Honestly? I think most of the reviews are appalling, an absolute waste of ink.

Almost without fail, lots of talk about how the gun is made, the same old history lesson about the manufacturer and then a single paragraph continuing the cliches about the particular manufacturer.

I find it incredibly frustrating - i know each review is just an individual's opinion, but I've shot guns I've read the review on and I just don't recognise them.

Vic in particular - what is it with that stare while pointing at a pattern plate (which apparently I never use)!

I'm afraid that is pretty much on the money :this:  , it takes a special kind of person to be able to deliver the goods in a gun test and shotgunning wise we just don't have the talent, simple as. It is quite a bit different in air gun magazines because they invariably give the important tests to people who truly understand guns, love them and know utterly what they're talking about.

I have bought gun magz for ever and you also have to give it to the Americans because they TEST guns, their write ups are often 4+ pages long and they talk in detail about the shooting characteristics of the guns and will spot flaws, again because they are enthusiasts who really love shooting.

We only ever get the tired old formulae of whether it's built on the Anson & Dealey or Boss principle  :mda:  (who cares), how wonderful the make is and a few lines about shooting impressions, written by people who are average shots who either can't or are reluctant to spot faults. If it were me I'd give the gun to a top flight shooter and asks him to write a warts and all after 4 weeks of shooting.

...This thread certainly looked interesting from the outside and upon delving deeper, I was not dissapointed.

All the usual posters, were to be found in abundance and in a short time, I felt quite at home.

The technical aspects and overall quality, were well represented with a good dose of Hamster. That is not to suggest "Function over Form"; the strong Wonko styling, was both contemporary and pleasing to the eye.

The thread was a little shorter than I usually partake of, but I soon got a feel for it and got on with the job of posting crap.

The best and most honest gun reviews will be found on here by knowledgeable folk who have shot them for more than a morning.

This could be a new side to the shootclay empire, real gun and product reviews, plenty of capable people on the forum to deliver reviews on their specialist areas on various equipment, guns, cartridges, glasses, hearing stuff etc etc. Matt I think your missing out on a trick here!

According to James Marchington, that literary genius, who has a column in a Members Magazine, we should, and I quote, "Beware of internet experts" ! I for one, will stick to reading the unbiased views of the well aquainted reviewers, on what is the epitome of the Gunmakers art. Oh, he also made reference to " a hefty dose of sarcasm" too. I presume it was another Forum he was referring to.

I read that rubbish too.

He uses our mag to voice his opinion.

We use forums to voice ours. He doesn't like it. The CPSA doesn't like it.

Shame. We don't have a mag to say what we think.

What a way to encourage new members and keep old members.

Any more insulting columns like that and I'll be joining BASC next year.

Rant over.
