I need to get a lockable hard case for my gun so that I can travel to the European FITASC in Lisbon in June.

I checked the ABS case that came with my gun, and it definitely isnt suitable (no locking loops, no padding or anything) - so I'm thinking I need a flightcase or something similar.

Can anyone recommend something suitable - not too expensive, but something with a bit of life (or even resale value if I get scared off by Lisbon :) )

Take a trip to Wiltshire Rod and Gun at Swindon or give Tony a ring. He gets all types and as a seasoned overseas FITASC Sporting shot will be able to tell you what survives. Can I suggest that you take advise from only those who travel. Not all boxes do what they say on the tin no matter how 'nice' they look!

I swear by Peli cases and have used them for many years for both my shotguns and rifles.

They aren't the cheapest, but coming with a lifetime guarantee they are, as far as I'm concerned, the best you can buy.

Also thinking about Lisbon Matt, I need a double shotgun case. Whilst I have good cases for the K80 and Wendy's Beretta, BA charges £50 each way per case. So thinking that if I get a double case I can save £100 each time we fly BA.

Would one of our hard Berretta cases fit your gun Matt? It's for a 682 Gold E & looks strong and lockable.

Bob - we'll have to have a look, my hard Beretta case has no locks, and no padding - and despite being ABS, it's very thin, so worry it might not travel well.

Thinking I might need to invest in one for the future as well. The Peli cases look pretty damn good, and I know a lot of people use them for film and music equipment when travelling.

Dream on Bob!!! I may be wrong but I guess they will still charge for two guns!

;-)

Yep - hence posting on here, I know we have some seasoned travellers... will give him a call.

Have looked at:

But no idea if they are any good or not... I used to have a number for a guy that made custom flightcases (for DJ'ing equipment - many years ago) but it seems he has gone out of business.
Matt,

I have the Shotbox case, whilst I have not travelled aboard with it yet, I would use it when I do so. I always transport my gun around in it, so you can have a look and see what you think next time we meet.

Thanks for the heads up Glen, thought the charge was just for generic sporting goods, and per case. Will have a check on their website later.

The Peli does look good, just laid the two guns out, and with some accurate foam cutting, should squeeze in. Maybe a review is called for and a suitable discount to Shootclay members

Bob, I have a double gun case you can have for reasonable money. Give me a call if you're interested.

Bob we got charged for 2 guns in one case so went back to using 2 cases as they are lighter.

Check with BA when you book on. Easy jet charge per gun.

Wendy has a Beretta ABS case, which is fine, but the Krieghoff Americase must be lined with lead or something impossible to carry for more than a few minutes without changing hands. Haven't checked the airlines yet, but will do at the first opportunity.

Glen: Matt is the travel consultant, but think we fly out on Tues 19th, returning on Monday 25th.

Not the same thing Matt but I used to have 4 Peli cases for some photo/exhibition equipment which I took all over Europe by air and never had any problems at all. the ones I had were 'protector' and 'storm' cases and if my memory serves me well, they were listed as being suitable for air travel, hope that helps.

The Peli Storm case looks really nice, think I could just squeeze two guns in with accurate cutting of the foam. Apparently need a hot wire cutter or an electric carving knife for foam cutting, there's a few you tube vids on how to do it.

I use an electric knife Bob but as with some of the equipment I used to carry, guns are heavy so you really need to allow space of foam between items or be prepared to stick a thick felt as I did to the cutout walls to stop the wall collapsing with the weight. It is not a difficult job and cheap to do. Use copydex glue.
