What guns have you bought?
Hi Phil,

sorry not replied sooner, but firstly, we have had our SGCs arrive this morning. Really chuffed as it was beginning to drag a bit, but Christmas has arrived early :D

It does seem strange though as I had a letter from my doctors to say that I was overdue my well man check up and that they found this out because the police contacted them and they checkrd their records! Maybe that is why we had to wait for our our SGCs.

Guns - we were working on a budget as the two of us were getting guns, so mine is a Webley & Scott 912 Sporter 32" multichoke.

Max has a deposit on a Hatstand Escort. Alan borrowed a couple from Paul Taylor at  Kexby.  We tried them out on the compak setup by the barn and Max just powdered everything we sent up. There is a but - second thoughts, we spectated at a couple of shoots where semi-autos (not Escorts) either jammed or didn't cycle second rounds. On top of that, she is also hearing how there are some other shooters who are very anti semi-autos, so Max is getting cold feet and thinking about an O/U.

That's where we are at the moment. Not shot recently due to poorly car and now work is getting busy with Christmas (I work in retail).

The CPSA registered club that I went to recently has a ban on semi-autos being used on the club ground.  I'm too new to know the history behind this decision but sound like it might be best to choose an O/U if you want to go anywhere and everywhere without a problem.

Hi Steve,

Got my SGC yesterday too

asked them on monday if I could pick it up from Nettleham to avoid xmas post & it was ready yesterday!

guns are now safely ensconsed in my cabinet he he.

As for the semi for Max, DON'T listen to the nay sayers.  If she is comfortable with it, go for it.  Paul at Kexby is a top bloke and will not see either of you wrong.  I hear what you are saying Robert but to begin with, as a confidence inspirer there's nothing wrong with them.  As for not cycling properly the only carts I've seen not cycle are 21s.  24s and anything over seem to work well, & don't forget that even with 28s the recoil on a semi is nowhere near an O/U.

Just been looking at the 912 - looks a nice gun and gets great reviews! nice one, enjoy it.

The only reason I could see for not getting the semi is if it makes Max a lot better shot than you! ;)

I've bought an O/U and a very old Browning semi but was looking at the Escort - nice gun.  Both mine came from Paul. Semi is in case her indoors fancies coming to the range and also just to have a spare 'cos you never know.

I know what you are saying about retail - spent 20 yrs there!! It made me hate this time of year ^_^

regards

Phil

PS pm me with which side of Lincoln you're on - may be able to pick you up sometime to go to Pinewood while the car is poorly

Have you been talking to Alan?

No, joking aside, the reason Max chose the Escort is because she tried it and she liked it and that's it. She tried the wood version and the synthetic version and prefered the wood version because the wood version felt warmer and the synthetic version felt, to put it in her words "like a toy gun". Womens logic eh! Alan and Paul Taylor both speak highly of it, especially with regards to value for money. Max is only interested in sporting and is unlikely to shoot any trap variant and upset anyone standing to her right.

My gun is from John Pinder at Caunton near Newark. Again we went to a number of dealers and considering the budget we were on, this felt right for me.

We haven't got them yet, we have very heavy deposits on each and we were hoping the SGC would arrive sooner and they would be ours, however, this close to Christmas and the car problems means that it will be very soon into the new year.

We'll give you a shout into the new year, we are in the Brant Road area. I take it you're in the Saxilberry, Sturton, Torksey sort of area, my old stomping grounds as I went to school at Sturton by Stow school when it was a sec modern..

Pinewoods will always be our "home" shooting ground, but we have been to others as visitors, have you had a  look at places such as Orston, Cocketts Farm and Nottingham at Oxton?

One of the other reasons for shooting sporting is also to shoot at country/game fairs, we always do game fairs and watched the clays shoots and this is what spurred us on to try shooting clays.

Best wishes,

Steve

Hi Robert,

many thanks for the post, the shooting ground Phil and myself and my partner shoot at is very sporting orientated with a couple of very nice compak setups, a fitasc setup and a varied but challenging English sporting setup. The atmosphere is relaxed and as far as I know, all gun types are welcomed as long as they are handled safely and properly. Heaven help anyone if they didn't.

We have visited a few local SGs and asked if they have any problems with semis shooting sporting and the reply was quite encouraging. I think the reply would be different if we shot a trap discipline. We would like to shoot at country/game fairs and again we've seen semis used at Chatsworth and local fairs such as Revesby and Brocklesby.

However, if we were to visit a ground that we were not sure of, we would not hesitate to either ring or e-mail that SG.

Max is bordering on OCD and will always, as far as possible, pick up her own cartridges as well as others. She also takes the attitude that it only takes one bad apple.......

Best wishes,

Steve

Hi Steve,

You weren't far out - Knaith.  So not far away & if I can help out don't hesitate.

I haven't visited any others yet, getting too few oportunities as it is at the moment so diving up to Al's place whenever time allows.  Only managed to put 50 through my gun so far :(

I have the British Shooting Show in my diary for Feb 9 & 10 so if you want a ride let me know.  I have never been to any of these shows before so no expectations but looking forward to it.  I gather there are comps being run there & Browning have a hospitality tent with a free drink for members   - I think I can take guests in too.

Looking forward to meeting the pair of you in the new year.

In the mean time all the best to you both over the festive season & don't stay too sober.

Same goes to anyone else reading this.

Phil

Hi Phil,

Hope you've had a good and prosperous Christmas and New Year :)

We stayed sober, Max worked most of the Christmas period and with my rota and public holidays, I was in and out of work like a yoyo!

I've finally got my hands on my concoption of wood and steel. Yes I've got my new(ish) gun at long last. Can't wait for Max to get hers now, although she is really getting cold feet about a semi. Whatever happens, she will still be getting her gun from Paul at Kexby.

A few months ago, he did have a cute Lanber 28" multi with a shortened stock, which she liked and I think that is the sort of thing she will go for.

Love to do the Shooting Show, however, being the saddo and glutton for punishment that I am, I'm going to Stoke to see Stoke City take on Reading on the Saturday, so just leaving only the Sunday open. Max is working, that weekend, so if I do go, I will be going alone. If I do go, not sure if I will take my gun or not. It will be not only the first time I've shot away from Pinewoods and certainly first competition.

Max has just told me that she is going to try and get time off work, if she can get time off she would like to go. But, if I/we struggle to get there, a lift will be more than welcome. As for a free drink at the Browning stand, if they don't accept guests, then wonders can be done with a W&S and a felt tip pen.

Best wishes,

Steve
