:fie:  Just to throw a cat in among the pigeons, I pretty sure that Perazzi don't use Turkish walnut.

Interesting post from Mike Bartlett about JJ's gun fitting. In the course of him fitting my RSR he put half an inch on my stock length. I changed the pad on my (then) gun to make up the length and saw my scores go up immediately......

Shooting with my RSR is going fairly well -  but progress is still hampered by an awkward eye condition (double vision!). Sometimes when I miss I can blame the eyes but sometimes I know that I can't !

Target acquisition is certainly easier with the 'head-up' shooting position and the gun does not shoot high.

Most impressive thing about the RSR for me is the lack of recoil even though mine only weights 8lb 4oz.. I am very recoil sensitive and had a full Isis system on my old gun. The RSR will shoot 32g game shells and not knock me about too much. I'm in the process of switching the std Perazzi pad to an X-pad and that should make things better still.

Last point: mine has a pretty stock, regardless of who grew the walnut.......

The reason I say not Turkish is because in the perazzi factory there are lots of photos of Daniele Perazzi in California with the biggest stacks of walnut I have ever seen!

I thought that Perazzi  used , Pine, Beech, and MDF normally?

Nice wood can be bought at extra cost.

FYI John Jefferies is going to South Worcester Shooting Ground on Wednesday 8th January to demo his range of perazzi shotguns. So if you want to try one or see him about your own gun fitting you can see him there.

i have used the gun which mike's friend owns , and it is without doubt the smoothest shooting gun i have ever picked up . very low on recoil , a lovely gun . feels hard to miss with. wish i had the cash to buy one...

Ah yes those "Cant miss with this one" model of gun. I have handled and indeed owned many of them over the years. Funny how these new fangled guns do not seem to be able to out shoot some of our greatest shooters who won and in some cases still win with the most agricultural of guns. Kind of makes you think that maybe its more to do with the shooter than the gun ?

But if mfrs did not keep coming up with new ideas and more things to adjust then many of us would not be able to justify the need to purchase the latest wonder gun to our partners.

Just a thought.

You may be right; but I'm not talented like many top shots -  so I think I need all the help I can get. And I reckon the RSR concept has 'legs'.

As somebody else has pointed out, JJ does regular 'demo' days - so you could always go and have a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that.....

Conversely I am a very competent fisherman and I know that I can catch most fish with 'average' gear and I do exactly that. But there are occasions when having the best equipment does make the job a lot easier.

I just wish I could shoot as well as I can fish......

I think we all need to heed 'New Gun Syndrome'.

They are all wonderful until we have installed a few bad habits and then they become just as good as the one we got rid of at a knock down price just to get rid of it.

I have spoken to John Jeffries, who says he prefers not to comment on forums, but he has told me that he would like to explain why the HPX guns are a little more costly than purchasing a standard Perazzi, which in the end, can often work out to be much dearer.

His comments were:

"One of the most important characteristics of an HPX are the special ribs that really do help you to shoot better, the SR1 and the RSR.  These special designs are only available from myself, through the HPX guns.  European trade protection is enforced on the RSR.

All HPX guns come with a guaranteed perfect fit (providing each customer can mount the gun properly) and this fit includes shaping the stock to the hand and the face, where necessary.

This is achieved over at least 3 sessions at my range or somewhere else, at no extra cost, including 200 cartridges and clays at a minimum. This sometimes amounts to 3-4 hours of my time.

This fitting includes any final minor alterations during the first year after each customer has got used to his/her new gun until perfection is achieved.

The wood for the stock is personally chosen by myself on visits to the factory, where I choose the best strength and best looking wood possible. It is also an upgrade to the standard Perazzi wood. The triggers are tuned to perfection, making  the gun much more responsive and precise. All excessive trigger play is removed. The gun is balanced correctly, to ensure it is fast and not cumbersome, but not too fast either.

All parameters are considered to each customer's requirements on order - bore size, barrel weight, gun weight etc.

I extend the guarantee to 2 years (normal from Perazzi is 1). Excluding the stock, but covering all parts and labour otherwise. For a cash with order sale, I include a free, best quality, English made gun slip worth £325."

He says, that all the above actually makes an HPX excellent value for money, and with the knowledge that you get a perfectly fitted and tuned gun in the end, which if you returned a factory gun to another place of purchase to attend to the above points it can and would, invariably cost much, much more than the £600 extra that an HPX actually is.

JJ  looks forward to meeting you on his HPX trade stand at the 'The Great British Shooting Show' in February.

I think considering the work involved and the uniqueness of the product, it's a perfectly reasonable surcharge on top of a normal Perazzi.

A few nice comments here thanks.  I need to put the record straight however.   My RSR rib is nothing like an ordinary high rib on any other gun.  In fact no other gun in the world has this rib.  What it does is let the shooter see the target better, not really to do with a high head position.  Regarding the comment, 'it has a rather open grip',   I tailor my grips to each particular customers hand shape so that observation is related to a gun that was made for someone with a larger hand.  You get a perfect grip for the shape of your hand, large or small.   Perazzi can't achieve the exacting fit that I do because they don't spend the 4 or 5 hours with each customer over several sessions that I do.   That's why you pay a tiny bit extra but you get a lot lot more.   Many thanks to all my customers for some great comments here and elsewhere.  Any further info required, please call me on 07711 456524.

Lets face it Ian, Ian Peel probably shot his best with a Miroku!!!! Even his Olympic medal was won with a Miroku. Do you ever see him using a Miroku these days? I know you shoot with him at times.

No mate not seen him shoot a miroku for years, I have seen him "trying" a few things out but he is back on a DT10 at the moment.

Presumably whilst waiting for delivery of his new 11.

Quite possibly we will have to wait and see.

I will never understand why Browning don't sponser Ian or some other top trap shooters. Let's face it, back in the 80's and 90's a huge amount of the top trap shooters in the UK used Miroku or Browning, but Browning no longer seem interested in the trap shooters for some reason.

Ring him up and ask him !

The phone number is in his post (7 above).....
