RichW,

Could you check and confirm that Beaters and Loaders ARE covered when being paid please?

CPSA HQ were waiting for clarification from the Brokers and when I telephoned the Brokers they were unsure, but the gentleman I spoke to was going to check.

Hi - this is one of those grey areas where the beaters & loaders are being paid they should be covered under the shoots/grounds own employee liability but I will chase up the Insurers again to get a definite answer (if you can from an insurance company)!

That makes absolute sense to me,  If they are being paid then they should be covered by the employers liability insurance providing that the employee activity has been declared to the insurer.  There would probably be recourse against a shooter's public liability policy and if a loader/beater had their own policy which included personal accident then they might have some cover there.  However not every claim for a loader/beater will be due to being shot!

Sorry to resurrect this, but this is misleading.

The CPSA insurance only operates as a policy of first resort if you are shooting CPSA registered events. If you read the wording carefully, it is then a policy of last resort if engaged in any other activity. That is they will expect your household or other insurers to respond before they will look at a possible claim.

The BASC policy  appears to be first resort across all disciplines mentioned.

This is a good point and one that needs clarification.  I am a memebr of both NSRA and CPSA so have the benefit of 2 insurances but I don't have any other cover.  Shooting has never been mentioned as regards my household policy as the NSRA policy provides £5k of gun cover.

I don't take this to mean only Registered Competitions.

I would expect cover to apply at any ground or club that is a CPSA member or affiliate conducting clay shooting activities for CPSA registered members.

The problem is twofold:-

  • Neither Insurance cover nor CPSA membership is mandatory in law so when you are not shooting a registered comp who knows if all the shooters are insured? Answer - you don't!
  • Does that mean that the CPSA insurance will not give primary cover if a member goes game shooting for example or shoots a few clays on his own land with friends and their own traps but not at a recognised ground or club?

I can't see where CPSA "authorised activities" are defined anywhere on the website as only clay shooting is referred to other than in the insurance summary leaflet!

GunsOnPegs do a good one, that covers all activities and is worth a look at - also with insurance beware of first line and last resort insurance small print. Some insurance looks cheap, but it is last resort, so in a claim the insurer will look to first line insurance before they go near the one you think you have. I have to say I don`t have great knowledge in this, but that is one thing I do know about. If your insurance is first resort or line (not sure of the wording) the claim happens easier and quicker, no messing about and long long times between anything happening.

Day passes were abandoned a few years back I believe :D

Hi  - I've looked into this and the wording on the liability leaflet says "The CPSA Liability Insurance is a Policy of First resort in respect of claims arising from the negligent acts of CPSA registered members taking part in CPSA authorised activities."

The word 'registered' does not apply to registered events, just that they are current members and is perhaps not the best choice of word. All current members are covered as a First Resort whilst undertaking the following recognised activities:

Clay Target Shooting

Game Shooting

Rough Shooting

Vermin Control

Wild Fowling

Rifle Shooting (including Stalking)

Muzzle Loading (black powder)

Beating & Loading

Angling from dry land(including wading)

Airgun Shooting (including FAC rated)

Cost is £41 per annum for Clubman Membership and £63 for Full Membership with discounts for Vets/Juniors/Colts/Disabled shooters.

Hope that helps clear this up.

Spot on.

I have to admit I have some involvement in liability insurance,  so have just spoken to the guy who places the CPSA facility.

He has confirmed that RichW1234 comments are absolutely right.

CPSA membership application here I come.
