Friend of mine sent me these pictures today - anyone guess what these shells (made by Eley/Kynoch) are for?

They are 12g shells...

(Facebook friends will be able to cheat - but will be good to see who really knows)

so the valleys of Ashford resound to you making firewood?   interesting if true,,, looks feasible, but expensive compared to an axe!

I thought maybe a refractory round,, used to get the slag / lining off the inside of cooling towers or something ?  but  I think that's an 8 gauge?

Don't know but there not being fired through any of mine

That slag may fall on your head
We don't have valleys in Ashford only mountains.

The valleys are Wales.

The Welsh could use these for sheep shooting.

Wouldnt want to be near the ricochet

Deershooter is the closest here...

These are wire cutting shells, designed to be fired from the wings of a plane, if it was caught by a barrage balloon.

There were vee shapes cut in the wings of the planes, with a firing action built in. if a plane flew into the cable of a barrage balloon, the theory was that firing this would cut the cable.

I have asked Eley if they can give us any more information about these.

Some good guesses though.
