It is curable in the early stages if you see a shooting doctor sooner rather than later

Ian, I once used to shoot at a little club called Cupid Green Skeet and ABT Club. There was an old guy there that shot skeet brilliantly, he never seemed to move his gun very much, except on the crossing pairs! He appeared to just poke at a spot in the sky, rarely seemed to miss either. He used an old Winchester trap gun bored cylinder in both tubes.

Remember the three fundamentals for skeet.

1. Head on the gun throughout the move (no gun down calling for the target)

2. Eye on the target (for obvious reasons)

3. Have the proper lead.

The third is a distant fundamental. A12g gun throws a pattern up to 3 feet wide so providing you're close that's good enough.

All targets should be shot with maintained lead except low 7 and perhaps high and low 8 which are really trick shots. To be honest I never really see lead at a conscious level, particularly for fast and aggressive shots like high 2 and low 7.

Watch and digest Todd Bender's 'Winning with the fundamentals at Skeet'. It'll teach you everything you need to know.

is that a dvd by bender ?

is there anything you tubey ??

cheers David will have a look. Just watched some bender but its all a bit technical for a Luddite such as me. I think the gist of it is see target shoot target but if your American you have to do it with a very strange stance, I believe that this strange stance is optional in most parts of blighty.

so who do we have on here who is an experienced skeet shooter who can offer advice.... Come on now don't be bashful we won't think your vain.

this is a serious request.

questions

on 1 do you need to take hi quickly to avoid hitting lo with same shot or better to let it out a bit.

as a right handed which is best option on 4 hi or lo first.

if your straight on 24th which is considered easiest option for 25

I used to shoot there too. It was run by Silvia Greenbank, her husband Mick used to work with me in the 70's. Bedford GC was where I first started shooting, Jim Sheffield taught me how to shoot skeet there.

If I ever get to the 25th clay as the option I will take low bird. Just shoot straight up its arse.

Cor small world Phil!

Actually Phil, I think the old guy who shot skeet was called Ken, he used to turn up on a Honda moped with his gun and his gear. I think he may have worked on a farm in the area.

Use the fixed pegs in the ground as a referance, kill high just before middle

Mostly high first depending on wind ,low is being powered up ,high is being powered down,

Now what bird would be best option for a trap shooter on the option?

the low one, its obvious now you said it.

cheers paul

I think I'd get an attack of cramp if I took up that stance. As for words per minute, he's cramming a good few in. My head would be spinning after a coaching session with him.

I am no coach but i typically default to the "Bender" method.

As for if i am any good i let others debate that - i just enjoy skeet. So take my words at the value of what you paid for them.

1). IMO if your breaking both clays with one shot your doing something wrong or the targets are set wrong, and in the rules if you repeatedly do it they will call it lost in the end. MY ideal placement for the breaking of high 1 is based upon my hold point which is on the target line about 5-7ft above where the top of the hoop would be. Let the clay come to my barrel and break it with very little gun movement - if any.

2). RH or LH pair on 4 - makes no difference - learn to break them both ways as you will need to at some point. You will find you may develop a preference on which way you take them but you have to be able to do it both ways to win anything and due to weather conditions.

3). Option - the one you have most confidence in simple as that. I mix it up now - always used to take high - but that changed in 2004 and i now would choose on the day.

thanks skeet, most helpful. Will have a go at ambush the hi 1 and play about on 4 as you suggest.
