I thought it was to distract the Ref, whilst looking at what all are pointing at, he certainly aint looking at the targets !

Bloody hell ! it takes me that long to change chokes and remember where the barrel selector should be AND that is before I make sure the cartridges are the right way up AND I use an auto !

met 40up at Thornley castle then after nearly inadvertanty stealing his cat we travelled to hodnet in his reliant robin to meet salopian. A thoroughly charming charecter who was our guide for the day and designated "wise man" Mr T decided it was a spiffing idea to only shoot the hard stuff and the wise man agreed so we set off in expedition mode up a big chuffing hill. Mr T shot some stuff and I shot "at" some stuff. We had left to right trebor mints doing mach 3 and incoming asprins just out of the earths gravitational pull. I tried many methods to hit something such as maintained fresh air but it became evident that this was alien to me, I found that catching the little begger then flicking through (as I describe it) worked slightly less badly. By about two million targets in the frustration was beginning to show on the wise mans face who until this point had managed to retain a degree of calm, he now adopted a new approach of encouragement by barking "now" in my lug hole. This had the desired effect of a few breaks on the stupidly tiny and fast aforesaid asprins. At some point in the preceedings my front bead decided to begger off presumably in sheer desperation and or the heat from many repeated attempts to save my honour which was not helped in any way by a stern talking to by mr T who said and I quote "we want a good show at the EO old boy, we don't want you making trap shooters look bad" no pressure then.
a nice day out with two good friends at a fabulous ground with apparently good targets although many of mine lived to tell the tale to there little battaue friends about the day a northern trap shooter tried to shoot esp.
I am now hooked on this malarkey as I hate to be beaten but I still need to settle into a style but when your at the bottom you can but improve.

He exaggerates m'lord. First of all he runs amock in a Beretta Premium dealers, scoffs two cajun chicken rolls with melted cheese plus chip mountain then out he goes to face a proper sporting ground. Booked in for 2 x 150, carrying 160 cartridges each he manages to shoot 40 of mine as well. First, to sober him up I stand him on the skeet layout and show him the big battue across the valley which turns him green. To settle his stomach we conduct him to the top left of t'ill at Hodnet where I leave Salopian founder of shooting instuctor associations to explain pointing infront of targets. This is an alien concept and he insists on adopting an ISSF skeet posture but gradually the light bulb appears above his head. For a while he does an impression of a man caught in quicksand but we gradually learn he likes call + mount + pullaway. He shot all the top of the hill from left to right without blubbing once. Back at the valley I lend him some more of my cartridges and on Salopian's instruction to give it a field gate plus three foot, bless him he did and blatted it. With tears in our eyes we bade temporary farewell to hodnet to return next month.
Addendum: No trapshooters were hurt in this exercise though some feelings may have been damaged.

.oh I didt mention running out of ammo and having to steal mr Ts to avoid a hike back to the shop oh and yes I forgot about the teeny tiny din dins.
I was also too humble to mention the spiffingly good show on the super fast bat thing. Ended on a good un anyway

A very good, truthful, revue from 40UP and ips.
We have to remember that here we have a considerably experienced Trap shooter let loose in Quicksand , no mater how much you flounder and thrash , the sand will suck you down. Spread your weight , slow down , think, and ease your way out of the mire.
Escorting, guiding and button pushing is considerably different to Coaching, cajoling and teaching and enforcing methods and techniques. But I always want people to enjoy our sport and cannot resist offering advice if a guest is struggling.
It has been a very interesting week seeing very experienced Sporting shooters who have shot Hodnet many many times turning up to see what Tom Jones may have in store for the Cheshire Shield on March 31st and the English Open in May, as they say practice makes perfect .
Do you Sporting Shooters ever work????

Tom Jones eh? Wonder what the course will be like. I hear it's not unusual.
I have really enjoyed reading this. It has reminded me of the "f**k me what county is that minuscule speck of dirt flying over" feeling i had, followed by "what clever tosser decided to make a clay go all loopy like" and "rabbit clays, more like rockets fired from a fallen over milk bottle". Keep it up ips it's a great feeling when it all starts to click, a bit like when you straight your first line at Dtl.

I know what you mean Simon. I have an issue with esp though, many targets do not replicate any game I have come across, for instance the only time I have seen a wabbit jump three foot in the air is after I shot it. As a esp newbie but an experienced shooter I see it from a fresh angle to most others and in my humble opinion esp targets need easing up. Not saying this because I am cack or disheartened as I know I can improve a great deal by putting my mind to it but I know that fundamentally folk like to hit targets and if you get some smart arse setting a target that is just stupid it ceases to be fun. Just my opinion.
It's easy to push a target out and make it a pot luck stand. The best grounds and course setters fool you with angle and good use of terrain. If i approach a stand and think thats a gimmee and proceed to chip and ding my way through it, i know i have been beaten by a good course designer.
