As has been said above, it is up to our shooting bodies to get themselves together so as to promote shooting in this country! Most of the public just associate guns with crime, even though we do win Olympic and Commonweath medals in shooting!!!!!

The media in the UK in general are not exactly pro shooting. So we need our governing bodies to get the message across to the media and the public!!! We are NOT a bunch of Rambo's and the hand gun ban has done bugger all to stop gun crime.

I have noticed that some large full bore pistols can now be had in the UK, but they have to have a barrel of at least 12 inches I think and a total gun length of 24 inches, this means that the pistols have an arm brace attached to the grip. I intend to have a go with one very soon!!!!

That's one way to make DTL more interesting?

Oh and before I forget!  Did you notice how much camo gear was in evidence in the prog???? It does seem that the camo gear is rendered somewhat useless though, due to the orange hi-viz hats and jackets as used in the USA.

Just to get it straight! It is a large dose of BRITISH "scaremongering" and I would be hard pressed to drag "American" sensationalism into it! As it was ON YOUR telly!

Not ours! And I might add a large dose of ethnocentrism thrown in!!!

We still have ALL of our guns!! (not just shotguns!)
Totally agree it was British scaremongering using American content. The sensationalism is the content where families go out for the day with their heavy artillery to blow up cars in the desert.you see private ownership of machine/gatling guns is to the British population sensational. I do not like to see any media of this type it is biased and largely manufactured with one aim.as you say you still have all your guns.however I for one would not swap our system for yours.I also do not criticise you Americans nor do I defend you each to their own.firearms in this country are used only for sporting purposes and not for self defence. Atb

Long Barrelled full bore Pistols were not part of the handgun ban, provided they had a non-removable arm brace.

Have shot a few of them (Taurus is a good choice by the way) and they are quite fun to shoot but nothing like the real thing since the arm brace dictates the shooting style and has a damping effect on felt recoil, unlike in normal pistols where the recoil is absorbed mainly by the wrist and correct handling of the pistol.

Not saying don't try it because, as I say, they are fun to shoot and are extremely accurate. I believe that UKPSA even still have the odd Practical match using them.

It just doesn't float my boat but, as many of you know, I am very fortunate to shoot the real thing overseas regularly anyway.   :triniti:

I have already got a 20 bore Remington semi for my 10 year old grandson to shoot clays with. Nice short stock on it. Very rare Cutts compensator.

That's if he is interested.

I would not force it on him.

Many kids in this programe were to young.

Hi all, watched "Kids with Guns" what seemed glaringly obvious to me was, that no one under the age of at least 16 years should be allowed to go hunting unsupervised, also why buy a child a .44 calibre hunting rifle to encourage them to shoot! Talk obout using a sledge hammer to crack a nut! On the up side, if a child shows an interest in shooting it should be encouraged under proper supervision, and with the correct equipment.

+1

that's about the same story as my grandson he was 10 I never tried to influence him into shooting waited for him to come to me and ask if he could go with me i also bought him a 20 bore o/u to start with now he shoots a 687eell to great effect and I put that down to him coming to shooting rather than having it pushed onto him.you could see on the film most of those toddlers were not at all interested in the guns in fact one wanted to play with the bubble wrap it came in rather than the gun itself.

this was in reply to rosso but for some reason my computer does not put the quoted post above it.

Do a search and you will find all sorts of statistics.  In some you will find 500 children and teens die every year from gunshot wounds. Another link will tell you on average 390 children drown in swimming pools each year.  It boils down to parental responsibility, whether it's teaching your child to swim and proper supervision, or gun safety and proper supervision.  Hysterics solve nothing.

I've tried to get my grandsons interested, but they are not!!! Anyway as a kid of about nine or so, I pestered my dad for an air gun, he eventually allowed me to have an air pistol. It was a .177 GAT pop out pistol, just like thousands of other kids had. The old man was ex army so I got a right drilling in firearms saftey and I was not allowed to use it un supervised for about a year, eventually I moved onto heavier stuff!! The things he told me stuck with me and since then I have had training in handguns, rifle and shotgun. I do think that teaching anyone to shoot safely is paramount, no matter what age they are. If a person is taught at a young age then so much the better, safety should be second nature, a habit in fact! Allowing kids to shoot/hunt all by themselves does smack of a lack of proper parental control however.

My views on firearms training have been expressed on the forum before, some I think thought them to be extreme or over the top. As a former instructor, when I decided to return to shooting after a break of about seven years, I booked a lesson so as to make sure that I could still mount a gun properly amongst other things, but more importantly to make sure that I could still remember to shoot in a safe manner! As it happened I still just did everything by force of habit, which was a bit of a relief!!!

Better to have too much training than too little though.

A documentary like that could not have been made in this country.

Amber Hill on country file is a fine example of how a programe should be made.

Very positive and makes us all proud to be British.

Want to make a stupid programe go somewhere stupid to make it.

"Want to make a stupid programe go somewhere stupid to make it"

. . . . . . .  just a tad scathing towards our american friends on here? You can show British pride without dissing other peeps !

I apologise for any offense caused.

Cannot recall any cars sheds boats etc being blown up in this country.

All American gun programes show this all the time.

It is entertaining.

I simply meant it was a stupid programe not made here.

It's a subject that is touchy.

"Cannot recall any cars sheds boats etc being blown up in this country"

Unless your name is Jeremy Clarkson !   :haha:

Toooshayyy. Brilliant.

I love Clarkson. He blows up caravans.

Just not with mini guns just good old nitro gylserene.

Perhaps he should use mini guns as well.

I suppose our friends across the pond think we all hate caravans.

Happy now.
