Ey up lads & lasses! My bloody shoulder has been playing up recently so I'm looking for a solid low recoil cartridge. I normally shoot 28g Oympics but wonder whether you guys have any suggestions? Will even consider a good 24 or 21g.

Yes, assuming the gun fits and you have a decent recoil pad, a light cartridge is lovely to use. Hull 21g plas work brilliantly and are very soft. Express 21g are even softer, but the pattern opens up a bit.

My personal choice would be victory sporter 28g if you can find them but you could do worse than trying the Hull 28g CompX soft shell but good performance.

Try a selection of cartridges and make the decision yourself . You will be told lot's of different answer's on here.

For 21g I'll take CompX over Rio, Eley First or Fiocchi Blue. I've shot a thousand of each so feel qualified to comment. Coach used them to smash birds at 55 yards without issue, also tested them on bunnies, they broke it no  problem.

For what its worth, I have been playing around with 24grams for a while now and in order of recoil being the smoothest (and this is totally subjective of course) here is what I find

Express Excels

RC2

Gamebore EVO/Fiocchi F-Blacks/F-Blu

To be honest, they are all very good, far better than me and they pattern so much nicer than the usual 28gram loads when viewed on a pattern plate.  The Express cartridges being my clear favourite, but too expensive to justify!

Has anyone tried the Hull Subsonic? Meant to be very low recoil even at 28g. I've only seen them on the website.

I use Gamebore Evo's, very soft shell and not too expensive, if you fit a green recoil pad as well I think you will be happy

I use a Greenpad on my MK38 and everybody that shoots it comments on how it seems to 'deaden' the shotshells compared to their own guns.  My Dad shoots my gun (and my bloody cartridges) and doesn't suffer at all, but when he does a few rounds with his own Beretta and 28g shells, he has to pack in as he has a lot of shoulder pain.  In the meantime, I'll have to keep on paying for the old bugger!  Greenpad and 24grams the way to go I say.

As Maddmatt says.

Try Gamebore Evo's.

I suffer with my shoulders (old age) but find the Evo's have low recoil and are clean burning.

Tried some Eley firsts yesterday  - 28G and slimline pad ...

not too impressed , bores are smeared  so will need cleaning ..

In contrast the  Lyavale high velocity 24g's i used last week   125 carts shot through, and bores as clean as a whistle and virtually no recoil

just going for a green isis pad next

Mart

I've found Eley firsts to be quite dirty and the fibres turn to some kind if tar in my barrels so I steer clear. By comparison the Eley Olympics are very clean. The cleanest cartridge I've come across tho are the Rio Target loads but back on thread! I don't feel any more recoil with Rio's than any other cartridge but they hit things convincingly in my book. But everyone's different, guns and recoil reducers are different so it's a case of trial and error!

Hull Comp X I find are a lot lighter and smoother than either Eley Firsts or Diana's in 28 grams and they also do very good low recoil 21 gram shells.

Use 21gm of your choice plus 24gm when needs must. RC 21gm were breaking 60yd midi with ease this am.

My first 3 coaching sessions were done with Hull compx 21g. Very light in recoil, and still break a clay if you point at it right! Haha.

I did find that they left a lot of deposits in the barrels though compared to the 24g evos I've been shooting recently?!
