Seen a lot of nice looking MX8's, but the are usually very old (20 odd years old) .None the less tempted to have a punt to try one out anything that would make the gun a complete no no? Logic, to me at least, says since they are the best gun out there if looked after properly they should be well up  to the effect of ageing ? But what are the things that should make a gun a no go?

A very good piece of advice is " Buy the barrels, not the Name" meaning make sure the barrels are in a sound servicable condition .

If you bought a gun that you thought was a bargain and then found it needed new barrels you may be in for a shock.

Over here bore jobs and reworked chokes are a deal killer for me.  OK, I forgot ports and aftermarket choke tubes too.  That may be less a concern 'cross the pond.  Everything on the gun is originally #'d so it is easy to tell if/what changes have been made.

If the gun has not been messed with then if/when it needs it,  it can be made like new by any decent Perazzi 'smith.

My oldest is a '72 and has about a jillion rounds thru it.  One a these days it's gonna need a new locking bolt.  Maybe.

Thanks for the advice. The guns here are not cheap by the way even when they are old :)  I never gave the barrels a thought to be honest other than pivot points I thought they would be fine they are un changed from the original fixed chokings.

Wonko as far as I have been told it is original other than a change of stock, the guy is throwing in the other stock. a couple of photos below not that they show much just looks like a well cared for gun... if the moving bits are as good as the outside wearing bits :)

I buy old and new. I like the old.....just saying.

Hi Nic

I know you know Perazzi's well the photo's above are only showing the outside but it looks well cared for what would you look out for in an oldie like that.. it is early 90's. I would value your experienced advice... albeit from afar I am thinking of having a punt on it half and full choke 75cm two stocks one with more cast to the right than the other no trigger kit but I assume these are easily got?

I'm also tempted by an mx8 special but no nothing about the special or what makes it special.  Its choked 3/8 and mc does this mean someone has played around with it?

I have never seen an MX8 of any age at less than €3000 and they are normally a wee bit more... these guns are 20 years old ! There is one in a gun shop not far too from me a 1968 vintage ... €3250 ! it has been given an overhaul though but that is an old gun! Just shows how they hold their value or how much the French regard then in high esteem either way that is new gun prices for a lot of makes!

Scroll down MX8 sport multi choke and fixed 3/4 £1995.00, doesn't look fantastic IMO I've seen better at cheaper price as well .

probably. I would have expected mc & full Check the barrel choke markings to be sure. *= full, ** = 3/4, *** = 1/2 etc. The perazzi website gives all the detail.

It's said perazzi barrels are of the very best but are not chrome lined the length of the bores and can rust if neglected. So make sure you check thd barrels bores for any signs of neglect. Pitting or speckling ( very light pitting often difficult to spot unless that bores are very clean i.e. free oil & fouling) .

Speckling isn't the end of the world and have no effect on how they shoot and if you wish can be easily polished out but be sure to negotiate a lower price.

Plenty on guntrader for that money.
(Sorry was looking on GT then posted )

One ting to look for is loose ribs.. If the ribs need to be resoldered it is not only expensive, but can change POI, as they (the barrels) will be striped and re-attached at the muzzle when the ribs are done. Some guys do a "half a$$ed" "we can reattach the ribs without the complete job". But in truth to do it right, the ribs are removed, barrels striped and resoldered and re-blued. Here (USA) the cost is about $1500 for the job!

If the barrels don't "ring" when struck, they have a loose rib. Perazzi are very susceptible with high mileage!!

It's one reason I passed on buying a Perazzi.
