To give an alternative view, just for completeness sake....
This is at best a highly dubious exercise, which is likely give you very misleading results. I know the perceived wisdom on t'internet, if it does not work out for you just remember the pattern plate may be the problem not the solution.
If it does not work out for you, don't faff about forever go to a (really) good instructor and get him to help you set it up. It is about the sight picture when you are breaking targets, not the sight picture when you have an artificial mount on the pattern plate. It is perhaps a decent starter for 10 but it is breaking targets that count.
Many a crap bespoke stock has been carefully crafted on the pattern plate.
