lack of observation/not paying attention is the major factor in accidents...the government/police love the phrase "speed kills" but it very rarely does it on its own! and absolutely refuse to admit it

have a look at http://www.dorsetspeed.org.uk/ and you will see somebody fighting the absolute bollox they come up with on occasion and absolutely refuse to admit it

just easy money to fill there coffers.

touching wood well over a million miles to date and only 2 minor accidents.....both caused by other people!!

Funny you should say that.....they have this thing called the 4E's of road safety....

Engineering - vehicle design, road layouts, road signs and other engineering advancements that improve road safety.

Enforcement - speed cameras and other enforcement measures that contribute to improved road safety. However as we all know, enforcement is being diminished due to the reduction in police traffic officers.

Emergency medical Services - an area that has had a positive impact on the reduction of fatality statistics due to advancements in medical care, both at the scene of the crash and in hospitals.

Education.

When the bloke had finished I piped up that they need a 5th E (well it is supposed to be interactive).......you are missing the important E for Exchequer (or Extortion if you prefer) because road cameras are really only for money collecting and taxing the motorist in a different way.

I can see that those courses in diplomacy and people skills training are paying off

Good going!!

I love this thread.  My hates are gits who want to argue with refs, I don't mean those who question politely but those who swear and get their mates to tell you want they think as well, and of course people who want to tell you how to spend your own money.  I earn my money and I'll spend it how I like!

If you actually have a Kemen you could prolly consider taking some advice now and then

"Enforcement - speed cameras" and other enforcement measures that contribute to improved road safety.

they just don't improve safety overall in reality the death toll steadily rises there are more accidents....mostly attributable to other causes rather than directly to speed.

you can juggle the figures to make almost anything seem true

as Mark Twain was attributed to say " Lies, damned lies, and statistics"

Yes never trust stats....you never know who collected them

I tried staying quiet on my speed awareness course today.......I forget though that sometimes my thoughts do end up as mutters.....and one apparent 'oh cock' did amuse those sat at the side of me............I thought i only thought it........
Got mine on Saturday week.  The b*st*rds 36 mph in a sleepy Suffolk village on a Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, there they sit in their poxy van - bloody parasites every manjack of them.  Grrrr

Bit ambivalent about speed cameras, the fixed ones tend to be where they're needed like junctions with an accident history, mobile ones are where they can raise the most revenue so usually a straight open road with good visibility so sod all to do with safety. I do try to stick to the limit in villages and towns out of consideration for the residents. Last done in Aylesbury 2002, that was one of the few fixed cameras that I'd say was deliberately sited to raise revenue.

I have just stopped crying tears of laughter...absolutely awesome!!

I would wilingly PAY to have a camera installed near my home. I live on a wide THIRTY that is 30 mph road where the average speed is some 60mph. The main danger is some posterior part,  overtaking someone doing the legal limit,  this puts them on the opposite side of the carriageway. Problem then is,  someone coming off their driveway with the "I am only going one way, so only need to look one way" syndrome, promptly pulls out in front of aforementioned 'ass bit' doing the overtaking, result "OH S**T". Swiftly followed by rather abrupt braking, some very erratic steering, (both contribnutory factors to cause of skidding) and at best a near miss or at worst an RTC. I keep a First Aid kit by my front door, which has to be replenished on a regular basis. With the dramatic reductions in Police numbers it can often take an hour for anyone to turn up. At the last injury RTC an ambulance arrived (by accident) but could not remove injured due to being 'out of area', that took an hour and a half before injured (thankfully slight) were removed to Hospital. If the installation of a camera was to reduce speed to the LEGAL limit, then bring it on. Can I just mention that I was once informed that there is no such thing as a Traffic 'Accident', there is always someone to blame !
