Due to certain components being unavailable I have been forced to come up with a new load for sporting clays use. I am going to be using Winchester AA compression formed hulls with High gun powder and Winchester W209 primers. This will be a 1 ounce load of #7 ½ shot. I tried loading this combination with a Claybuster CB1100-12 wad. The load formula came from Hodgdon’s website. I was not happy with the crimp, as the folds were too deep in the center (see right side photo). I have read that due to the density of the High gun powder this could be an issue. I talked to Claybusters a couple days ago and they are sending me some samples of their CB0178-12 and the CB4100-12 wads. I won’t get these for a couple weeks though. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with this and could recommend a wad that would allow for a correct stack up/crimp using 17.7gr of High gun in a 1 ounce load. I also have available to me Claybuster CB8100-12 wads. In the past I have made several of the following loads with very good stack up/crimp results. Winchester AA compression formed hulls with 18.0gr 700-X powder, W209 CB1100-12 wads. I have seen a couple recommendations of just increasing the powder drop slightly but I would prefer not to change velocities or pressures stated in the load data for the High gun powder. I have also included two pictures showing the crimps on my loads. On the left is samples of the crimps when using 18 grains of 700-X, photo on the right is when using all the same components with 17.7 grains of High gun. I would guess that there is a 4:1 volume difference between the two powders mentioned as High gun is much denser. As a side note all of the loads were done on a manually operated MEC 9000G. I have tried various changes to the crimp at stations 4, 5 and 6 without any improvement. Thanks for any information.
