Often the friend will shoot first. Seeing leeeeed from someone whose style you know well can confirm kill points on a tricky birds. The Americans favoured composed squads many years ago in FITASC sporting.

This is something that is particularly relevent to me at the moment. I had a big lay off over winter, only shooting once (which was not with my gun) and now need to get back into it pronto. I started weekend before last and its been horrific to say the least. Started off on a 89 at FITASC which I though was ok (dreadful start), followed by a very messy 91 on the next day, and then an 85 on Saturday at Windrush which was frankly embarrasing for Adam to have to watch.

Usually I just shoot on a Sunday, doing 2, sometimes 3 reg shoots which keeps me functioning nicely.

Now however I need to get out and just pull the trigger a bit to blow the rust off and get my timing back. Its not something I enjoy but it is certainly needed.

Clever, having shot with you at Hornet last time and knowing you have good fundamentals and are at a stable level I would say you are a prime candidate for mental training. It is something I have spent a lot of time on over the last few years and would be happy to have a chat to discuss the possible options available to you. Let me know if you want to meet up and discuss things, you should be progressing further than you are and I thin kif you are keen to do so this is an easy win for you.

Matt and John have my details if you want to get in touch.

Ed

I think I have to agree Ed. In my amateur way, I can usually coach anybody to progress. Doing it myself is the issue.. At Weston on Sunday, I think I went `xx,xx,xo,xo` on about FOUR stands. That isnt shooting ability, thats head!

Matt, if you can forward Eds details please.

I had 4 straights and 1 seven, dropped first bird out shows the mental side is definitely coming together. The 2 ones and a 2 are obviously technique. Just need to put them both together :)

I would also add as a side note that missing one or two in the middle/end of a stand is not always mental. It can be the technique you have use is not the best suited for the target and therefore is only good for hitting say 3 ex 4. I think the need to keep learning re technique is a constant until you are a quite well established shot, say end of year average in the mid 80s.

The one thing that makes me laugh is when people say "yeah I missed a couple because they were easy so I stopped trying" I've never met a person where this is the case. It's usually said as a bit of a mask for poor shooting skills.

Back in the 80s and 90s when I was a very serious sporting shot, I used to shoot one registered per month, a few open re-entry shoots and then one weekend to shoot skeet or DTL/ABT just to clear the mind so to speak which refreshed me somehow. Now after a long lay off and having reached 60, I know my competition chances are perhaps limited. I am however just as competitive as I ever was and I am learning the ropes with OL and loving it. My aim is to be good enough to shoot in the 2012 winter series at Beverley CTC and put in respectable scores. I WILL get there.

Having read this thread I think both what Ed and Glen said is very relevant. If there are certain targets that pose you problems then just go and practice them.

Try and shoot them in different positions and presentations and don't be afraid to try different techniques until you find one that works all the time for that type of target. As Ed says often the reason for missing one or two might be down to a flaw in your technique rather than your mental game.

I'm currently in the same situation as Ed, I had a break from sporting (slightly longer as its been 2 years) but my main focus is to regain my timing and consistencey. Any particular targets that cause me problems I spend more time on but on Sunday I shot a case of shells at 3 targets either as singles or different combinations. Not all at once but in stages say of about 50 a time. The idea being that it just allowed me chance to practice my technique and iron out a few errors in my style. I did it on my own with a friend trapping for me so there was no distractions or pressures and you don't feel obligated to do what the rest of the group want to do.

It certainly helped me for my career as a fish shooter.... in barrel...... Guy.

That sounded better in my head....
