Nothing wrong with tweed i wear it for general use particularly in winter. Mrs ips is having a bespoke waistcoat made for me for my birthday next week as we speak :)

Can't see what value 1% would bring to any business, what really is so wrong with them wearing a pair of jeans and a tee shirt to go clay shooting? Leave the camo gear for when they do whatever they do in camo gear?
Does someone tell you what to wear when you go out? We are supposed to have freedom of choice in this country and that includes what we wear. Have a look in the "Sporting" shooting magazines they are full of adverts for camo gear, there was even a bloke in full camo in the supermarket last week, even I thought that was a bit over the top though.

Is that your charger?
Nope.....it was a HELICE dive into the pool....phew it is hard work...sipping cocktails in 40 plus degrees C.......but someone has to do it...

So as I'm new to this and need to make sure I am doing everything correctly.

Shoot                                     Gun                              Clothing

Game                                  Side by Side                  Tweeds - Dog optional

Registered shoot                Over/Under                    Skeet vest, chinos, designer specs and as much branded gear as you can carry.

Open Shoot/Practice           Semi Auto                      Full Camo + Face paint

This is going to get expensive  :fie:   :fie:   :fie:

Ah, but you will be one of the "Elite" if you have all the right gear. :thumbsu:

MIke - good to see you clearly missed the point, sometimes its not just about your freedom, its about the good of the sport in general, therefore you compromise and dress in a manner that fits with what everyone else is wearing, not the exact same thing of course. Yes the mags are full of camo gear, for people who need camo gear when they shoot living animals and not clay targets.

As far as being in the elite club, another point missed, clay shooting is one of the best social levelers I have seen, a broad mix of people who all have one thing in common, they love shooting.

Then walk away fast....just saying..!!

I would never step forward to help a stuck auto user or worst still someone new who does not know how to use it and is fiddling...or fumbling....run like hell I say....true story..!!

As Hamster has already responded to your comment, I will only add I am shocked and appalled at this comment from such a senior and experienced shooting participant. Are you truly saying that you are so prejudiced towards such guns that you would rather see someone do themselves or others harm purely from a gun malfunction rather than step in and help yourself??

I had not been shooting long when  I had an experience with an O/U which had jammed with a live round in the bottom barrel I was extremely grateful to an a chap who just quietly came up behind me and calmly guided me through the situation, it was my first ever major malfunction.

Equally I shot the Classic at Upavon and was on a squad with Matt Hance, I was shooting a semi auto , on the first stand it jammed after the first shot, the  sliding block had cracked, the shell was stuck half way in the chamber and the whole thing  was just inoperable. Bearing in mind this was a Major shoot and top shots were focusing on their game, Matt Hance very calmly and again quietly helped me sort it out, and checked  with me after the squad had finished shooting the first stand  that everything was ok. These are examples of responsible senior shooters behaving and reacting in a very helpful and non judgemental mannner. I would have expected at least as much from you.

Matt, I have not missed the point at all. I have never, ever worn camo when shooting clays, but I do see young lads with semis and camo gear shooting clays with their mates.

They probably cannot afford or want to buy a skeet vest as they will not be shooting competitions but they do enjoy shooting and they should be encouraged, it's only a coat after all.

My "elite" was a dig at some shooters whose attitude to other shooters is a bit odd, I have met many people while shooting clays and 99% of them are OK in my view but there's always one or two funny buggers out there.

You're last three words said it all "they love shooting"

So far this has been a very good thread with a lot of positive if conflicting opinions. Please don't now spoil it by taking swipes at each other!! :haha: :haha:

One point that I would like to make regarding semi autos is that there are many shooters out there who ,for various reasons, would be unable to shoot an over/under. Would you ban semi autos so that these individuals were no longer able to continue the sport that they enjoy? I hope not. I don't think this applies to Pump actions though.

Bloody 'ell...I've started something here, haven't I ? ...look, as a newbie, I am about to suggest something, if its a mad Idea at least its because I'm still a bit ignorant and green, but would it not be a good idea, that when we all apply for or renew a Shotgun or a Firearms license we should have to have passed some sort of safety competence test at a shooting ground, and first time applicants would also have to have had a said number of lessons and passed a competence test before being allowed a License, maybe you should even have to be issued with a competence certificate first before you can even have a gun certificate, then, if ever you lose your safety certificate, through incompetence, you would have to earn it back to keep your gun license. It wouldn't matter then what type of gun you had ( or what you wore) as long as you could prove you were safe and competent and had taken proper instruction on the darn thing before being allowed to own/use it....like I said, that maybe the worst idea in the history of shooting, I dunno, but it might make semi Autos more palatable if everyone knew for certain they were in safe proven hands. I for one am still going to cross them of my list though and stick with O/U's.

As much as we don't want to see any more restrictions put on shooting I firmly believe that there should now be some sort of competency test before the issue of a new certificate.

As time goes on I am ever more aware of the poor standard of safety displayed by certain individuals. You certainly can't drive a motor vehicle without passing a driving test, the problem is though that like drivers many would pass their test and then ignore what they've been taught.

Don't be afraid to start a post this is what makes this forum so good. If you step out of line the Moderators will soon put you right.

fair point but why would you not be able to shoot a proper gun other than recoil issues which can be sorted by various methods these days ?

because of feel weight balance etc. and the right to choose whatever gun one bloody well wants to shoot regardless of narrow minded opinion
