Two good days of shooting.

The Hodnet challenge @ West Midlands shooting ground was absolutely amazing, the ground itself was immaculate and the targets were even better, something worth putting in the diary for next year.

I shot a 108/120, I shot it better than expected, I haven’t been there for nearly 10 years. It was won on 116/120 (amazing score) by Tom Youngs from Scotland.

Secondly, was the The Jack Pyke at Sporting targets.

I found it more enjoyable than previous years, the targets were still close, fatigue got the better of me after Hodnet, dropping some early, then having to straight the last few stands (the more difficult stands) to come anywhere close. I dropped 6 on the last 3 stands, but already dropping 4 early ones which was fatal.

I finished on 109/120, it was won on 114/120 by Martin Warmsley.

English Open Supersporting this week at Barbury.

Absolutely agree about the Hodnet Challenge. It was one of the best shoots ever. Fantastic variety of targets and a very scenic ground. Liked the idea of having a supersporting stand every so often, again adding to the variety. Finished on 93 just out of the prizes in my class, if only!!!!
Have shot competitions there one or twice a year for at least the last 30 years and it’s always excellent.

A beautiful day up here in gods country but my usual partners are otherwise engaged with other things. 100 sporting with my new mate Dexter (one of the kids paid to trap). A really nice steady round. Still plenty of misses that were simple inconsistency of holdvpoint/method but an 83 which I’m happy with. And I’m especially happy because my 80+ returns are becoming regular now so I need to get practicing to try to teach 90 .

Another weekend, another 100 sporting and another 80+ score.
Quite a few changes this week and some very small tweaks to the course made quite an impact. What went from a card filling easy shot had the shooting cage moved slightly to the side that brought a tree into play. Quite a subtle change but the difference in shooting the first clay was hugely more difficult. All in all I enjoyed my day but I need to start thinking more about the misses. My card is mainly filled with 9's and one or 2 lower much more difficult stands.
If I can hit 9's then is it not unreasonable to think I should be converting these to 10's?

I’m a fairly new shooter, 1.5 years approximately. I was floating around the 70s for a while and recently seamed to take a step change up to be around mid 80s. So I guess the answer is currently I’m above my average but on an upwards curve.

I’d only start to worry once it starts impacting that upwards curve.

Chances are things will get worse before getting better again, so I really would enjoy the experience and journey whilst things are going well.

I’m really enjoying myself at the moment and can’t get enough of it so it’s not unusual for me to keep looking for the next improvement. I enjoy the process and challenge of improving so all’s good.

So, 2 shoots last week, EJC on Thursday and Owls on Saturday. EJC still frustrates me shooting in the tall wooden bungs, last stand I ended up shooting first target fast to get the second one before it dropped behind trees (sim pair) and mucked up the stand to finish on a 78. Owls was a good course but very wind affected and again ended up on a 78.

Yesterday we shot the CG challenge at Barbury which was 50 targets each of sport trap, super sporting and finally English sporting. Long tiring drive to get there but it was a good course again if a little bit tough in some sections! 3 x sport trap layouts, first one 20 targets of 2 OR and 2 sim pairs - no singles. 2nd layout 15 targets 1 single then a sim pair and 3rd layout 1 single and an OR pair. First layout was a bit on tough side and on last layout the B bird a blaze going away couldn’t really see it.

The super sporting was good but stands 4 and 5 were my downfalls and the sporting was again good. My only minor complaint was no break in between, you go from layout to layout and by the time we got half way through the sporting I felt a bit drained but thoroughly enjoyed it. Saw Wynne reffing stand 1 on sporting which I think was hardest stand on that section and a few other refs we knew.

It felt fairly quiet, no waiting at stands and hardly any “no targets” but I think today and tomorrow are fully booked. Winning score at moment is 130. I ended up on 95 which I think on reflection was 10 light on counting stupid missed I had but a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Nothing now til Coleys 120 on 24th which is normally a good day too.

[Yorkshire Clay Shooting]

Was a far different experience than I was expecting. A lot more laid back than I had assumed and a lot busier than I was expecting also. Not in a bad way people were got through stands quickly and efficiently just the sheer amount of people there was something I was not expecting. It’s a good thing for the sport . I was told by a good few it was an exceptionally difficult course today and my score would certainly attest to that. It was really good fun though and I will be doing it again without doubt

Did the CG shoot at Barbury, lovely weather and good squad. Always happy when I shoot with my Tash. Very tiring though, getting old. My best performance was the first layout of the sportrap although my first stand which was 2, I missed 3 of the four birds but I ended up on 15/20. It just went downhill after that . All the mistakes today on birds I should get (not the ones that I might or might not get) were gun up and holding my gun out. I’m a gun down and start near the trap girl and I should stick to that. I think I’ve also got too lazy and about how I shoot. When I put the effort in I surprise myself but I need to do that throughout a stand and every stand. Good news Donna I spoke to Josh about the top field grouse butt. The very low C bird had me scraping my gun twice. He’s going to have little pallets things made so if someone needs it it’s there.

Not good news I'm afraid. Putting the targets where everyone can see/shoot them would be good news. A sadly Recurring theme here.

Good news Donna I spoke to Josh about the top field grouse butt. The very low C bird had me scraping my gun twice. He’s going to have little pallets things made so if someone needs it it’s there.
