My understanding is

I

"It is not where keys are kept, but access to said keys"

If your keys are in a safe to which only you have access then that is acceptable

So you significant other may know where the keys are, but has no access to them

:santa:

Good answer, just wondered.

Hanging up on a hook that says 'gun cabinet keys' on the right hand wall when you enter the gun room......Why??

The FEO (Firearms Enquiry Officer) is covering what he needs to cover over the phone - the bobbies shouldn't really be repeating that but concentrating on the security and you.  Maybe they were just using the paperwork to talk to you making you think it was a duplicated process.
Robert - I assume your last reply really meant for HDAV and not me? I say this because my question was (in short) has anyone else had a telephone interview as part of a certificate renewal and if so what did the FEO ask/cover?

For clarity, I have been shooting for decades and have in that time had just two face to face interviews but I've never had a telephone interview, so I thought I'd ask you guys................ like you do.

From the responces so far, it would appear that only HDAV has had this type of contact. Which, it appears may have a waste of time, unless your [Robert] supposition is correct, which to be fair it probably is.

So, no worries. I'll talk to them today and let you all know how I got on and what they if you get a similar call at some point.

OK, I've had the call and the nice Woman simply asked me to confirm that I filled in the form myself. I resisted the tempation to say "No my Mommy helped me" We then simply went through most if the details as written on my application.

So, other than her quesiton "have you bought or sold any guns since fillng in your application?" It was in fact a complete waste of time as far as I can see. I say this because I had already answered ALL of the questions she asked me.

She did say however, that there would be no need for me to have a visit. Which is good, because there is actually no need for the Police to check my security as it's not their responsibility it's mine.

She also said that I'd be getting my new Cert in a few days. So, despite this seemingly pointless bit of beaurocracy the whole process has been pretty efficient and reasonbly quick.

On the whole I have no complaints.

Sounds like a better experience than mine just watch out for knocks on the door....

PS if you put the cabinet keys in a safe, where do you put the safe keys?

Maybe I just sound more reliable

And.......... I'm not telling you where I put my keys!

On the wall next to the safe saying 'safe key' silly....then you always know where it is.

Ah, I can see that this is a trick question.................you see, if I was to keep my gun cabinet keys in the safe,  I could keep my safe keys in the gun cabinet !            You won't catch me out with that one.

I think you will find that you cannot get either a Shotgun Certificate or a Firearms Certificate unless the police or a civilian FEO first check that you have a secure gun cabinet in which to keep it.

So perhaps they trust that you still use it when dealing with renewals as they now have the threat to come at any time on reasonable grounds to inspect your guns and security or ammo if relating to a firearm as distinct from shotgun ammo.

So who remembers the days before security cabinets were required and gun was kept under the bed or propped up in corner of kitchen hard to imagine now.

Perfectly fine to have a cert and no cabinet, many people do!
