shotgun patterning

I always pattern my guns.  But only when I just get it or change the stock.  Once I know it shoots where I look, I don't bother.  From a rest or or steadied stance it tells me if the barrels shoot straight and to the same POI.  Not that those topics have been an issue with the Perazzis.  I want a pattern just a taste higher than 50/50 so I don't have to dig into the target.  I pretty much ignore the center bead if the gun has one, and rifle shoot to adjust the comb (or decide that stock just ain't gonna work).  An old pigeon shooter guy (would that be bloke?) told me about ignoring the beads and slooooowly swing into the center point of the plate and shoot for a sorta dynamic patterning.  So I do that from each side and the bottom, both barrels, and have a look see.  It's been my experience that if those six shots are all going the same place enough that my usual cone of wobble will account for whatever difference, I'm happy.

As for testing diff loads, I'm way past cavalier.  I used to and noticed that w/out some tedious counting I was learning nothing but that the gun shot to the same place w/ any load.  Thank you Mr. Perazzi.

A buddy in Oz wrote, "An old mate, who passed away some 4 years ago, always said that if he was as good a shot as the worst shell ever made, he would be happy."  Pretty much where I'm at since no two shells are gonna make the same pattern, ever, if I just can put whatever pattern there is on the target then I'm good.  So there are some advantages to being a hack shooter - makes life a lot simpler than adding the extra worry   :hunter:

Yes pattern plates are fine to see what sort of pattern you get from different shells and also to see where your barrel's POI is.

Don't know about useless, if you've ever had a gun you couldn't shoot with and suddenly found out why on a pattern plate because it was printing low and left   . I know I have.
I have not had this to the best of my knowledge but a good friend of mine had a DT10L a few years ago that shot way off mark form one barrell, i forget if it was top or bottom but anyway point is that patterning just for peace of mind as Hammy says is probably wise.

I guess in that case yes. I just trusted my Perazzi tubes were working in parallel. Literally :)

Clever

I too had never even considered that this would be possible assuming that guns were test fired or something untill last year when my friend patterned his DT which he had struggled with for a year or so of ownership. And now Hampster tells us that he has had same, makes you curious dont it ??

I reckon I must have had at least ten guns over the last 30 years that shot about 3' wider than POA (thats NOW my excuse and I am jolly well sticking to it)

My problem wasn't tube related as it happens because both barrels went left and low, it was a combination of too low a sporting stock and insufficient RH cast. All of the better makes test for trueness long before the gun gets anywhere near assembly but Beretta to my knowledge have been known to consider a few inches off centre as within their tolerance levels   . What I do know is that it made smoking stuff near impossible.

Hi Clever

All shooters can add their views it is just as important to me   ! This is going off at a slight tangent but the reason I was asking this was also to do with cartridge choice. I am currently using a cartridge..well mainly because others use it and its the cheapest. I think this is the wrong criteria for selecting anything let alone a cartridge, which lets be fair, is a pretty major thing that enables you to break the caly. I am thinking of moving up to a more expensive catridge, but in the interests of shooting science and thrift think it would be a good idea to check out the patterns of a couple of the more expensive brands verses the cheappies The ones I currently use are called Solognac we get then from Decathlon €160 (£135)  per 1000 no idea who make them. As I say I could go and buy carts at about €200 per 1000 Saga Solera for example  but if the pattern is the same then why bother? Mind you I have only seen the Solognac in 28g 7.5 wheras I would like to try 8s in th efirst barrel then the 7.5 in the second.

Hi.

As you are in France, try the Italian/French brand, "Cheddite".  We can get them over here and their "Universal Trap" which is actually their cheapest cartridge, is really very good with good hard shot and great components.  It retails for £158/k over here.  They are available in 7.5 and 8's too.

I shoot them, so do a number of others on here.

Was defo only one barrel that effected my mates, we couldn't believe it from a DT10L :(

Hi Skeet

I have never seen these cartridges here but will defo search them out. The problem buying cartridges here, for me anyway, is that to get variety you need to go online and although the cartridges are not too expensive the delivery charges are high. In effect what happens is you spot say saga solera at 200€ per thousand and have to pay 40€ del which knocks the deal on the head:( I can't understand why the del charges are so high  its only a ~ 30kg package. I do have a problem though in as much as I can buy 1500 solognac for that price and as a newcomer to the sport would it be better to be able to shoot say 40 rounds with the cheaper cartridge or  30 with the more expensive. I think what I may end up doing is buying some of the "better carts" next year if I eneter competitions.

What about Clever Mirage? T1 or T2.  Come very highly recommended and are nicely priced.
