in the market for cheap ss as a project to return for next season. What is ideal choke for phessies.

my local dealer has about ten for sale under 200 quid incl aya no1. What should I be looking for in a s/s for phessies.

I know nothing about s/s

cheers Keith a trip to macavoys followed by lunch (on me) hows that sound ??

always wanted an old s/s don't want ou for game I am a traditionalist it just ain't right imo

The main problems are stock shape and gun weight. You'll overcome double triggers and auto safety - as peter croft says, you can drive a manual car can't you. Most likeable cartridge at the moment is paper case pure gold 30gm 6s. They smell better. The holy grail is a boxlock English pigeon gun.

thanks, am I likely to get a cheap single trigger job or double trigger only at this price.

oh and paper or plastic wad ?

No single trigger, fibre wad, choice of choke (mostly none) tradition you see. It's the stock that will kill you. Start by building the comb and length up. Collectable is Webley 700 2.75x30"

yes I can remember shooting TNs sxs at OT kicked the bejesus out of me. Ou prob better BUT I have always wanted a sxs. So we don't want any choke then !!!! Interesting

Choke a disadvantage till 40yds then choke required then heavy cartridge. Old S/S will not shoot steel so no ducks unless you buy bismuth (£2 shell)

just had message from shoot boss. He says if I am going next week I HAVE to bring my gun.

wondering now if I should stick to what I am used to and get a 686 game or similar. Was planning on a sxs and get used to it on high tower thing but with no time for that I could make myself look like an arse with an unfamiliar type of gun.

anyone any thoughts on that.

Yikes, couldnt get further away if you you'd tried.. Offer stands if we can figure out the logistics, it's an aya no3 I had in mind to lend you

If you get stuck there is no 'shame' in using a clay gun however, but you should be able to pick up a nice sxs for 2/300 quid, there are also quite fun to strip and refinish so don't worry of the wood work is a bit tired.

thanks pp

yes that is exactly what I had in mind a fun refurb job BUT will I be able to handle a sxs after thirty years of ou ???

what do you think ???

Difficult for me to answer as I haven't had time to get too ingrained in ou. Ou is easier to shoot, no question, I would say I shoot 80% as well with sxs on clays, the really high stuff being what I find hardest. BUT I agree with you sxs is much better for a game day with your shooting experience you will be fine with sxs, it's worth getting a couple of trips to the clay ground first as it will shoot differently, I find that I shoot sxs higher than my ou.

A couple of hundred quid on an sxs won't be waste of money, they are much more suited to various game outings, you could also use it for walked up when ou get heavy, it's a also different enough to justify spending money on..

i have bought an ou game gun but that is only for really high days, I would much rather use one of my sxs for game, they just feel right.

The only thing is don't go too heavy on cartridges, this time of year 28g no 5 will bring most things down without taking your shoulder off, I use 28g imperial game no5 or 28g black gold dark storm in 6 ( really a 5) through AYA no 3 and aya centenary with no issues.

One more thing to add is that don't forget you aren't there to shoot at everything unlike a round of clays, if there are birds you feel it best to leave whether unsporting or you feel unconfident then it doesn't matter...

I have an old side by side that I inherited. I do not know a lot about them but it came with a load of felt and cardboard disc things and a bag of  tiny lead balls. The gun has 2 hammer like things, one on each side and there is a long wooden rod which slots in and out from under the barrels. There are 2 small tins with little copper things in, it states caps on the lid, but they must have been made for a VERY small head ! It would also seem that gunpowder comes in different colours too, the 2 tins I have are both black. There are 2 lovely leather purses and one of these rattles if you shake it, it also has a lot of numbers stamped into the brass nozzle on the top. The other seems to have numbers on too and the nozzle slides up and down, with a small spring loaded catch on the side. That seems to contain some more powder stuff, which is also black. I am unable to find any method of opening the gun in order to load it and there is some faded writing on each side and on top of the barrels, it looks like J- -  es Pudsey or Pugsley, or something along those lines, it is very faded. It has very nice figured wood, but seems a bit on the short side. You are welcome to use this, especially if you can find the concealed lever or button that opens the ruddy thing !
