I have found everyone on this site to be very supportive and in most cases everyone seems to be 'a good sort'

what I think our sport lacks is a bit more 'sociability' when someone new wants to shoot it can be a bit of a minefield and also probably a bit intimidating, what would be nice (I know that's a bit of a weak word in todays society) would be some form of club or group of likeminded individuals that have for want of a better term 'get togethers' I'm not talking speed dating here - or even shotgun weddings! but how about a calendar of social evenings throughout the year - say once a month in different area's where shooters can meet up and have a few beers or a bbq and tell a few exagerated stories, you know a bit like most of us used to do years ago, get togethers could be posted on the site for socials and not just 'meet up's at shoots', I think that sometimes shooters can be seen as a bit of a 'clicky' bunch by dare I say 'outsiders' if we could pull this off we may even one day manage to become a truly social bunch.

Any thoughts or suggestions, maybe it's already going on and some of us just don't know about it, I think a lot of us got hooked by going with 'one of the local crew that shoots' it's now a bit of a different world, I hope the initiatives of the latest - have a go - ideas to get youngsters into shooting work, but wouldn't it be great if we also had a bit of a social scene too, perhaps the odd fundraising ball for charity as well?

Just thought I'd see what the general concencous of thought is, best regards to all, Growl.

Are you organising my social life, or did you just read my mind?? ;) :.:

I was lucky enough to meet up with Gary (Skeet UK) last week and he imparted some good tips to me.

To be able to do this in our area with a few like minded individuals would be a great idea, particularly through the cold winter nights. Nothing better than a pint in front of a roaring pub fire and talking shooting.

Without wishing to pour cold water on a good idea, I think this has been tried in the past. For a variety of reasons it never gathered any momentum. I think the principal problem was the diversity of shooters involved. Trap shooters didn't want to listen to sporting tales, sporting shooters didn't want to listen to skeet tales and so on.

Oddly, it seems although we're united by a common interest we're poles apart.

Sounds like a good idea, however I don't think anyone else on here lives anywhere near me! :(

Same here Les, no members for miles.

Many years ago, after inter-club shoots it was off down the most local pub for some grub+pint, and a reflection of the shoot, plus putting the world to rights.

Sadly this is now down to tea+cake afterwards if your lucky? How times have changed!

We have a very sociable OT meet on saturdays, no booze involved but lots of good friendly fluffy rabbits with a great bunch of shooters.

Not sure that going to the pub straight after a shoot is my bag though.

When I first took up clay shooting, a lot of the members of my gun club, including me, would meet up for a drink or maybe dinner. Sometimes we even took the wives too! But it almost seems that gun clubs have changed too, we seem to have more "shooting facilities" these days, as opposed the "gun clubs" of old. I guess it's a sign of the times. :(

I think it's a very good idea - the only draw backs I see are that folks either live too far apart or won't get involved unless there's some shooting involved with the gig.

When I used to organise mass wreck diving trips up to Lochaline (Sound of Mull), we would quite regularly fill two dive boats and get 20+ divers, of all ranges, newbies and the old-n-bold, coming along for the diving and the crack. I think if the two could be married, it stands more chance.

Good luck with it Growl and I'd be interested to see if this takes off - there's nothing like breaking the ice between folks who've not met, or may not be members of an existing 'clique' (no offence, but it's just a simple fact of life that all sports and forums have them).

Cheers,

Bren.
