Purbeck today, 100 bird Sporting. A chilly afternoon, with rain clouds threatening but no actual rain. The icy wind , obviously from Siberia, didn't spoil a great afternoon. I found myself on the same squad as our very own Schmokinn, and the seven of us braved the rural setting with some very mixed targets.

I was giving my new F3  (new as in got it yesterday teatime) its first outing. It is still exactly as "out of the box"; no fiddling with trigger, no playing about with the weighting system. It just had a quick squirt of Napier down the bores with a brush and a wodge of blue absorbent paper shoved through it and that was it, good to go. There was absolutely no need to do this of course, I'm absolutely confident that Mr Mulliner wouldn't let a gun out of his establishment that wasn't entirely ready for use in all respects.

The first half was a great run-in, most of the squad responding well to a good variety of targets, having started effectively at stand four to avoid the other afternoon squad. There were a few that fooled me, but I was revelling in my new toy too much to worry. Gosh isn't manipulating an over & under an entirely different experience when it's been semi-autos all the way for the last couple of years?

The second half, for me, was more testing. A couple of blaze crossers, fast and low, had me bamboozled (couldn't see the dam' things) and a few up on the grouse stand were beyond my capability. We did watch a gentleman whose name I don't know crack out an impressive 94. He was obviously a chap oif discrimination and taste (that's right he was shooting an F3 too).

I thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon, varied targets, a good squad, cheerful and confident referee/scorer/button man (thanks Sam), and me playing with my new toy, of which more elsewhere.

Can't wait for the next one. This year I have patiently explained to my wife that the dictates of thrift mean I must ensure greater use of my new gun; more days out shooting. Ower, Owls Lodge, Horne, Southdown, Podimore. Thje logic of this is quite clear, and she has obviously embraced it and wishes to extend the same line of though to getting the maximum poissible use from our expensive passports...,

Thanks, Purbeck. A good day.

I think todsy at owls was a really good set of technical clays , yes agree on the firm and tricky side , but no silly edge on things , or hanging stalled in no mans land , everything visible but if you had any weaknesses in style and techniques it certainly showed areas to work on , eg Simo pair of battues a definite for maintained lead and a quick shot on the first with a huge lead ,,,

very good mr Faulds

Owls also, same squad as Julian Morris who did shoot very well, Owls is / was once again not for the faint hearted that's for sure , didn't think anything was horrid but as Steve Lovatt kindly pointed out its a place that will find you out, it kicked many better bums than mine, I'll be back, as will many more next month for another attempt.

in answer to the title and question

hodnet

badly

Busy shooting week ??

Atkin Grant and Lang today. It's getting better and better there and I thought this was a well balanced course. There were only two or three stands which you really ought to straight and I dropped 4 over those! Grrr.. I then had a disaster on the stand with high r/l and tower r/l, only hitting one of the first birds. I was way in front and couldn't cut back enough. Deceptive.

Finished on 88. I reckon 95 is right for HG and Ed Solomons put in 94 by lunchtime.

West London tomorrow!

Will seems tomorrow might be cold but dry - let's hope its warmer than they think but stays dry.

scores like this I cannot begin to imagine possible. Dtl, abt, ot YES even I have done such scores but esp tis super human so hats off, in fact hats off to anyone doing 80.

off for more practice on sat

Owls, just a small note, last month in squad and shot (squad rotation wise) in front of Nick Chipper Portlock who took High Gun, yesterday I seek out Paul Ricketts (HardFocus) who is on a bit of a roll winning C class everywhere and in jest threaten to break his fingers, (humorous comments that were taken very well) Paul duly takes C class and i shoot in same squad as Julian Morris who takes yesterday's high gun, I'm clutching at the belief that I'm everyone's else's good luck charm

Today myself Stewie Keen and my daughter Beth went to the last day for Prescott, Beth had a beginners course with Jim French ( ex Coleys) whilst me and Stew did our very best to use up al the clays in each and every trap :) bit cold but otherwise top morning capped off with raiding the cake tin(s) of the, Chelsea and Shotgun bun club, thanks girls. Wish Emily and Dan all the best for the future
