Putting my scientific head on for a moment...

With the odd notable exception all chemical reactions are affected by temperature. So the exothermic reaction occurring in your shotgun shell will be slowed by the decrease in temperature, this tends to affect slow burn powders more than fast burn ones. With slow burn powders it is possible that the powder will not fully ignite by the time the wad has left the barrel in cold weather.

So there is no doubt in my mind it affects the shell, however this is in laboratory conditions and the difference may be so negligible that no shooter could ever tell the difference out on a shoot.

You also have to bear in mind the effect temperature will have can be different depending on the make up of the powder and additives, so brand X might be better than brand Y at dealing with the cold.

Anecdotal test for me was about 2 weeks ago 50 carts left in boot and topped up with 60 stored in my house and I could not tell any difference during the shoot.

Well I am very pleased with all the technical responses on this and only a little thread drift and fisticuffs make this post 108

Thank you very much people

Hang on I need to put my glasses on.......it seems very very smaaaaaaaaall

I have read a fair few threads on this subject on Trapshooters.com; apparently in sub zero regions they get a lot of what they refer to as bloopers when shooting in really cold weather. We don't get temperatures as low as those mentioned so any drop off in velocity would be probably be undetectable but shooting hot shells in the summer, I personally do notice a slight increase in thump on certain days.

I'm pretty sure I've read articles on shells that purport shells made using what's referred to as double base powders are much less susceptible to cold temperature.

What I'm not convinced is of much use is giving shells a quickie warm up on the way to the shoot or even the radiators, if the shells are routinely stored in very cold areas in the first place ?!

My vast stock of 25 carts is in the under stair cupboard, they are nice and warm and guarded by a vicious 4 year old girl, good luck burglars!

God, now we are going to have numerous threads about revoking Tuftikins licence. AAAAAAAArrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh/

Anyway, back to the thread.

I've never considered temperature on cartridge performance and store mine on the concrete floor in a garage (not telling where though).

So i'm going to store some in the house until the weekend and shoot both warm and cold cartridges on Sunday to see if I notice any difference in performance, recoil, etc. Not sure how I'm going to keep the warm ones warm thoughout during the day but hey ho?

What this space.

DT
Well, shot at Beverley yesterday using both cold and warm cartridges (even had some stored in my jeans pocket to keep them warmer) and have to say I noticed absolutely no difference at all.

There goes that excuse for missing targets then

Thats only because you had em in the wrong pocket Pal. :)

PS- You shot very well yesterday, very nice last line
