Barley and wheat will be in soon and pigeons are already hitting adjacent stubbles.  I'm looking for some suggestions for pigeon shells, currently unimpressed by clear pigeon 32g 6 compared to dark storm 30g 6 (5)  but if this summer is similar to last I can expect to rip through 3,000 carts in next few weeks and darkstorm arent cheap! Looking for fibre only and 5 or at worst 6, thx

I would just buy the cheapest ones i could find - end of. I couldn't give two hoots about - This shell is better than that shell. They all go bang and will kill. Having just had a quick look at some of the prices for 'game cartridges' i nearly fell over backwards. 'Dark Storm' £348 per 1k, just to kill a pigeon. There are two around £230 which i would use if i had to - Hull pro game and Express Power pigeon. Failing that some cheap clay cartridges would do me fine.

I very rarely shoot fibre so this may not mean anything in your case but I almost always use clay load number 7 shot for my pigeon shooting, over the years I have tried everything including big shot such as 5's (gave more runners in my case) and 6's (OK but patterns too loose compared to 7) as well as 6.5's which I actually quite like. My favourites are either Eley Superb or Express World Cup 7's, once you get used to the difference between clays and decoying pigeon which takes a few shots   those 7's will pole ax a 35 yard pigeon through 1/2 choke, I even find them excellent for very high flighting birds.

My advice would be to see if you can get hold of some Italian fibre loaded makes such as FBlack in 7.5's (which will, be English 7), even if they are regular 7.5's you will be surprised at the performance. A very good clay shooter put up a post on FB only this week having shot 350 pigeon with clay shells out of a hide.

Bizarre... I always have more runners with 6 than 5 but agree about 6.5 as the Hull Driven Grouse have been very effective on tricky pigeon before. I also find pheasants drop better to 5 than 6.

I will try a box of large shotclay shells as you suggest, worst case I can use them on clays!

If you are shooting over decoys inside 45 yards (measure it out, you will be surprised ) then 28 gram 7.5's fibre wad will kill pigeons with ease. I use a Briley 'MOD' extended choke in my Beretta and thankfully (I am now without a dog) I get very few runners.

No question bigger shot is more effective but you need to factor in pattern density too, in other words if I could throw as many 5's in a load as I can 7's then I too would opt for the former. Unfortunately to get 350 number 5's you'd prolly have to buy 48g loads.

The reason I even tried 32/36 gram loads of 5 shot was because I kept reading about these incredible distance birds people were pulling off when they wouldn't quite commit to decoys or when chasing the ones that flared off after a shot was fired. What I actually found was that they were no better at ordinary range and if you did push them out a bit the lack of pattern density meant fewer shot actually connected with the birds, I kept having to walk 200 yards to fetch birds that "towered" - no thanks, what's the point of that ? You can knock down birds at respectable distance with 7's and 3/4 choke.

interesting topic.

on my recent rook shooting expedition I was using 30g 6s fibre through 1/4 or 1/2 choke. Now I accept I am not the best shot but I was convinced I hit some of em but they didn't fold !!!

I'm not a fan of 1/4 unless they're very close, especially for crows.

That is some shooting, how close were they ?

I had a .410 for a while but found it almost useless over decoys (and a joke on flighters) unless the range was kept really short. I'd be happy knocking that many down at 30 yards with that average using a 12 gauge.

Cool, thanks, I use the same choke in my franchi, 45 yards is a loooong way for decoy shots, most are shot well inside this

Agree, before I got shot of my 410 hushpower you could clearly hear eley sub shot in 6 hitting the bird and watch the damn things fly away
