Age doesn't necessarily infer wisdom. Sometimes it just means someone has been stupid for longer.
not sure what circles you move in but I have never met a stupid experienced shooter.

I've heard some pretty awful advice from guys who have been shooting 20 years plus (Christ that's nearly me now).

of course you can pick up lots of good advice from others, the problem is filtering out the 90% of crap that comes with it.

find those who are progressing quickly and ask how they did it, most will be happy to tell you- they may even have had lessons, shock horror.

I am prob old school like many. Coaches in my early years were not heard of in trap one had mentors FOR FREE and they became close friends. The guest list at my wedding to first Mrs nutcase in 1990 was 90% shooters 10% family. Great sport trap shooting great people lots of knowledge and all shared for free.

just saying.

Yep, I can remember a Coach being something that got me to the ground !

i am feeling in a cheeky mood so here goes cos I don't care.

expensive coaches Imo are over rated. There is no substitute for experience even if experience has not brought cabinets full of trophies. Befriend an experienced shooter there are many of them buy them a brew and ask them to watch you they will be only to pleased to pass on there knowledge. If there over fifty you will acquire heaps of knowledge at no cost. And prob make a friend for life.

JOB DONE
Understand what you are saying, and that's almost how I started out.  Shooting with someone who I played cricket with then with his help I now shoot at a better level than him and the people who I shoot with socially, that's not me being big-headed it's just happened.

I only learned to drive just over a year a go and now I can go and shoot registered competitions and progress as a shooter, however I felt that I needed someone who knows what they are on about just to have a look and point me in the right direction.

Everyone who I spoke to recommended Ed and I learned more than I did in the three hours I spent with him than I did in my previous 10yrs of shooting.

I won't go in to details as I don't want to give away Eds methods for free, but there were a few things that he changed slightly that I thought I was doing the right way in to ways that are so much more efficient and effective.

glad your progressing well. Good luck in all your future shoots

as I say I and many others are old school and formal coaching just did not seem available or indeed the way to go. I do not take anything away from pro coaches all I am saying is that anyone who can't justify the cost or like me just do not like the formality of a teaching scenario CAN get very good advice from experienced shooters.

BIG difference between coaching and instruction.  I think Ed will back me up on that.  Having said that an earlier post said "don't keep doing the same thing and expect different results"; those are words to live by.

Learn to live in "Why" not where when it comes to missing.  Shot high, low, in front (the pro side), behind etc. are all where.

Take a crosser, farther than you regularly shoot relatively easily and you just can't break the thing.  Right away you begin guessing where am I? which means you don't understand "Why".   I see this all the time targets that your not familiar with like this crosser way, way out there out of your comfort zone.  The key here is to realize this "the eyes can't see what the mind doesn't know".  This is where an instructor comes in.  You might want to find a qualified one and you scores will improve.

coaching / instruction whatever you want to call it...... There is no trap coach in UK that has more experience or knowledge or better suited to pass comment on my shooting than my mentor and I get advice (only if I ask for it) for free.

friends help each other.

just saying.

That's all well and good when your in a position to have a mentor of such standing. The rest of us have to seek out the help of a coach / instructor if we want to improve.

surely every decent club or ground has a bloke sitting in the corner who has been shooting donkeys years he may or may not have a cabinet full of trophies but you don't shoot for donkeys years without knowing a thing or two and from my experience will be only too pleased to help and advise. Also friends who shoot together regularly tend to know your style and can tell when you start doing something differently. I believe that ideally you have to know someone to be able to advise them as knowing how someone cannot shoot CAN be more important than advising how they should shoot. I have prob four close friends who know me and my style inside out enough for me to trust there advice.

to conclude

find an old bloke they are full of knowledge and not just shooting.

ps

no offence intended with the term old bloke Mr you know who you are just a jovial term of phrase:)

All good replies and what I would expect however there is a difference.  More importantly...

Remember, most people think that hydrogen and helium are the most abundant elements in the universe. This is not necessarily correct, its free advice at a gun club. All well intentioned, but not always correct.

Cheers and shoot well this weekend and stay safe,

Danny

You'd think the subject was how to save the planet in three easy steps.   Taking someone from obvious, easily spotted and cured wrong habits to a reasonable standard is not rocket science, it happens every single week end.

ps. Chap called Gary Mills cured my misses on tower birds in about 5 minutes, altered my hold point and the rest fell into place, went from 70-80% misses on these types of birds to a trickle.  :)  That was over ten years ago and excellent shot that he is, I'm not aware of any titles he may have won.
