Having been watching a bit of Trap recently I've notice a lot of shooters do the following: having hit the target with the first shot, they eject the spent case, then take the cartridge out of the second barrel chamber (which would have been the 2nd shot) and place it in the first barrel chamber and put a new cartridge in the second chamber. If you've followed that.. Is there some technical reason why?

But surely if it's 'Dumbos feather' they would want to leave that 'lucky' cartridge in the top barrel?

I suspect it's probably just a routine thing. If you watch a squad for long enough you will notice a lot of shooters have little things that they repeat before every shot.

For instance I always unload the unused top cartridge between pegs and then when on the next peg always reload the top barrel first. Oh and I also rotate the brass so the brand name is at the top!! Sad or what ??  :(

At one time, this was done in the belief that if the same shell was in the top barrel for a prolonged period, it would alter its pattern/ ballistics due to heat/recoil. Now its just a routine..

I was led to believe the same, but more the older cartridges when crimps were not as well done (Winchesters excluded, they were heat sealed) it was a common belief among Trap shooters that continued recoil on the unfired catridge caused the crimp to loosen thus affecting it's performance. I still have a box of Eley Trapshooting cartridges, paper case, fibre wad, 6 star crimp and 1 1/8ozs of 7 shot. I personally think it was all part of a Trap Shooters routine, I used to do the same thing before and after every shot, just to try and keep the concentration and stop me from watching other shooters.  I have no doubt that someone far more knowledgeable will be along in a minute to give you the 'correct' answer though !
