Evening folks, a mate of mine wants to get a custom stock made in the UK. Nothing outrageous just a normal stock and forend made to his dimensions with a palm swell out if a decent piece if walnut (he works in timber so has a blank in mind ready to source)

I've done a few searches on the forum and come up with Dennis Stepney at UK gun repairs and Mutley on the forum.

Is there anyone else that could perform this for him, he is based in the East Midlands?

Thanks in advance.

I phoned around last year for prices. Won't mention any names but the dearest one was in Somerset £3500 to £5500 stock and forend, more for top wood. 6 months to make it.

Just too expensive for what you get.

you can get one made in Germany, Italy, Portugal, about £1600 - £2500 with quality wood. In a week.

USA $3500 aprox av price, top grade wood, custom checkering made in about a month.

Know what I would do.

From what I've seen I'd definitely go abroad..!
Its to go on a Parcours as well, sovereign scroll I believe.

He's had a quote from Elderkins at Spalding as they are only an hour down the road from here, but not sure if they have a track record with competion guns rather than traditional English guns. Anyone seen a modern or competition stock that's come from Elderkins?

There are stock makers in the UK but, to be honest, you'd be wise to go to Italy.

Better still, go to Germany and have a Nille Griffe stock made. It's far better than a traditional stock, isn't worthless if you choose to sell it and you can even choose the wood.

fair point I have seen some too but I am sure you can get bad ones abroad I have certainly known more than one trap shooter return from abroad with a nice looking but poorly fitting stock. At least in UK you can return easily and have the issue rectified

I was quoted about €1200 to have a stock like this one made for me at a local gunmaker although I really don't know if the ergonomic style grip is the way to go... Never done anything about having it done yet either...procrastination and the Scottish tight fist gene kicked in but I might get one yet. Ian has a point about getting alteration done should they be required that is why I thought local when was looking into getting one made. Its a two hour drive rather than a few days in a hotel and flights etc... mind you, you could make a holiday of the whole thing.

i suspect time is a greater issue here. Once you have decided you want a new stock you tend to want it straightaway, which doesn't seem to be the way with UK stockers, with several months being quoted, which would suggest to me they are already busy enough!

Easier to hop on a plane to Italy or Portugal and get one fitted and made in a few days (You may have to wait a couple of months for an appointment mind). Depending on where you go you have a huge selection of blanks to choose from and you can visit a local range to try it out before you fly home. Some stockers will watch you shoot with it before making final adjustments and finishing. If you decide it isn't 100% when you have shot for a while use a UK stocker to modify it for you (or do it yourself).

Treat the trip as a holiday and get to shoot at some great facilities and meeting some interesting people. Hell, you could even take your other half!!

Two to four weeks is my normal turnaround as a max, if you want it quicker you pay more as that means long days and nights....

that looks pretty much the same as the one mutley made for me except mine is Monte Carlo. My wood is better. about three weeks start to finish.

I will let mutley tell you the cost if he wants to

oh and the grip on mine is prettier. In fact the whole thing looks much nicer than that one, but similar concept.
