Today, likkle wifey came with me shooting for the first time, and she had a go of mine, she fancies having a pop now and again.

as i have no idea, can someone give me some pointers on a nice 12g U/O shotgun, short barrels max 28, as the wife struggles to hold it, so it need to be light, preferably m/c m/c , i would probably use 24g carts for her.

appreciate any advice

Try finding something with an appropriate stock length, as well as barrel length. Consider an Auto.

If you bring her down one day, I have a 20 Bore, designed for more petite people, she can use that.

Light guns will kick more. An appropriate length 12 gauge, with 21g or 24g carts, could be better than a 20.

Also consider an Escort Youth, semi Auto in 20g. Or a 12g. Would be appropriate for your Son as well and isn't a major investment.

Something decently balanced, with a stock short enough and compx 21 g shells. Would tend to shy away from a 20, lightish 12 with 21g shells would be better and about 70 odd quid a thousand cheaper for shells :D

Have a look on guntrader, theres plenty of multi choke lanbers and bettinsolis on there for about £500 or even a few miroku and Nikko skeet guns that would probably do the job to get her started for a year :)

Browning medallist is a great starter gun.

thanks for your input, we will go find the following and try them if possible.

yesterday we was offered a nearly new light weight Caesar Guerini but i was told by a mate to stay away from them, not sure why

Nothing wrong with Guerini's...i have had mine 5 years and never missed a beat.....though consider an auto with a 26 or 28 inch barrel...be far lighter than most doubles and will be far far softer on the shoulder

He probably wants it for himself. New Guerinis certainly, are great guns...go look at the Summit Impact, shex!

You obviously know, where to go for good advice.

You will need something with a shorter stock or one that can be cut down..this isn't optional either, do it right or it will never work for her, will kick her to bits every time and then she won't want to do it anymore.

You will probably find, that she wouldn't struggle with yours, even at 30 inch, if the stock was the right length for her, as the balance would come between her hand properly...newbies also tend to lean back, which doesn't help.

I know plenty of women who can shoot a 30inch 12, so it isn't a given at all, that women require less gun, they only require that it fit them.

Most guns are made to fit men and even we need them tweaked. Women have higher cheek bones, narrower shoulders, possibly longer necks not to mention the boobies factor....boobies may necessitate a greater pitch adjustment than us guys would require.

Actually i shot various standard 12 bores for 20 years without any problem.

As there is no description of the Mrs size yet.....this is really all a load of 'pish'....apart from treating women as little women who should have a 20 bore auto etc etc etc ....you will be saying close the left eye next...........Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuull.......!!!

As for changing the pitch .........play with it at your peril...!!!....if you do not know what you are doing!!

How do you know the size of her chest anyway!!

I can just heard the 'your behind it' coming next....tish tish!!

I didn't really expect much less from you to be fair.

Read what you want, and say what you like....which is fair enough I suppose, it is the internet after all.

Advice is advice. Many suggest a 20, so he needs to know this...it can work for some...lets ignore the fact that I clearly stated that just because a woman wants to shoot, it does not means she cant shoot a 12, or that I know many women who shoot standard 12's...lets ignore the fact that women do have different shaped bodies, with different features than guys...and then, lets just turn around and say it's all "pish"...

Trouble is Nicola, some people might read this and believe you and that is going to ruin shooting for a great deal of women who might like to try it.

Harley, you should know by now that women are complex creatures who find it difficult to verbalise exactly what they mean/want. I suspect that when she says she wants a shotgun so that she can join in with your hobby she doesn't exactly mean that. It's obvious really that the subliminal message is that she really wants one or possibly more of the following; a new washing machine, a new vacuum cleaner, a new iron and a new pair of shoes wouldn't go amiss. Buy her one or more of those and she'll be over the moon.

Potter

If I bought Mrs Fuz a new iron I would get that round my head and a karate kick to the nuts! safer to buy her a new gun and be done with it :.: :.:

Potter, great advice .

Fuz, yeah me too ;)

Nicola, im not experienced enought to do measuring/fitting and stuff, so i cant comment on size appart from she is small.

we both looked at your suggestion, and there's not many about (i found two) but no pics yet, anyhow that must mean there bloody good and no one sells em on, or there's none left (i doubt the later).

Skeet, this ones for wifey ,honest guv, as we like to spend time together, even after 17 years of being married.

today she shot a little 410, but to be honest even though she was hitting them, i think its too small for sporting.

i would prefer 12g if possible, so i can just get one type of carts, maybe a reduced load for wifey.

I am sure you are right.......

Of course why on earth should I offer my opinion as a 'shooting woman'.....as to what is a good gun for a 'shooting woman' when of course you would of course know much better........and pardon me for giving my opinion or advice from my own experience.....as a 'shooting woman' and daring to voice it.......for fear of stopping millions of women not take up the sport .

Have you heard yourself ???

Is it a histrionic time of the month or something????

Why must you buy one right away? Just let her use yours for a while and see how she gets on, if she gets to the stage where she wants her own gun then at least she'd have a far better idea of what to get.

Harley mate, unless your wife is small, weak or very petite !!! can I suggest that you start her on a standard 12 bore.
