Have broke the mithical 4000fps with 55gn 243 and 95gn 260, both lightest for caliber bullets, with pressure running has high as I'd dare push it, not keen on sticky bolt lifts and popped primers!!!
I got to 4010fps with 66gn Bergers in my .243Ackley, before primers started to flatten. Ended up at 3980fps with superb accuracy. Perfect foxing tool!

How long did that barrel last? Light heads pushed fast burn tubes in 243 that is the downside to a very handy calibre that so nice to shoot.

The tube is still going strong with over 1800 rounds down it, still grouping 1/2 MOA. No signs of firecracking when my gunsmith pal borescoped it at 1500 rounds. I'll start to consider a re-barrel if/when the groups open up to1" or more. I'm a part time 'keeper, and this particular rifle is a real workhorse, so if I have to spend £600 on a re-barrel at 2500 rounds she will still have earned her keep.

Spot on! The .243Ackley is a Tikka 595. My others are Sako 75's. Good solid, well built rifles....with no plastic bits.

Except for the plastic 3 shot mag and the plastic bolt shroud on the 595.........but good solid rifle non the less!!!

I have a tikka m595 myself in 243 its a lovely thing also got a m590 continental in 222 .

AI 5 and 10 round mags, Manners stock, two stage trigger, over sized bolt handle and much more......

The throat is longer in 5.56 and I have a 1-9 twist in all my 5.56 platforms. I tooke the Armalite to the range with 55Gr PMC FMJ-BT. It was very windy and due to crappy trigger, flinched two shots. I lso only used the Versapod and held the mag with no sand bags.

A better picture of the Armalite and groups:

Nice rifle there Darkside and a very good caliber, I was very tempted to go .260Rem myself a couple of years ago, but a very cheap Sako 75 in 6.5x55 came up for sale so I bought it instead.

I just had it re-barrelled into 6.5x55 Ackley in a Border Cut sporter weight, tuned the trigger and dropped it into a MacMillan Sporter stock. Shooting 142gn SMK at 2940fps with amazing accuracy.

Thats a lovely set up Darkside

hnachaj no disrespect to you but i dont see the purpose of mock assault weapons, they never seem to shoot very well and more importantly can give the wrong impression on legally held guns,in my opinion.

3 shot 100m group shot testing home loads.......think it likes 41.5gns of H4350 and 129SST's

Ultra, you have to excuse Henry he's in Canada and anything goes there ;) plus if you can, why not :D

Can someone explain the difference between a standard 6.5x55 and a 6.5x55 Ackley? not being particularly a rifle person apart from the odd plink with a .22 rimmie and a couple of goes with a .243 I thought a calibre was a calibre bit like a 12g same size hole across the board.

Sorry my mistake :( good luck with it.

Ackley is an improved version of a standard cartridge size.a 243 ackley for example is correctly named 243 AI (Ackley Improved). It is fine tuning of a calibre.

so I'm guessing its a bit like polishing the forcing cones in a shotgun? a bit of fine tuning around the chamber area? :)

'Ackley Improving' a cartridge basically moves the shoulder forward and changes the shoulder angle to 40degrees (typically). The net effect being more case capacity (i.e. more powder) and therefore more bullet velocity.

Another 'plus' is that the Ackley case stretches less which in return means less frequent case length trimming.

Almost any base cartridge can be Ackley Improved, although some gain more benefit than others.

A picture speaks a thousand words.......
