Was in a local gun shop the other day, and 3 different people came in wanting cartridges for 80 yard pheasants. They all left with 40 gramm 4's.

Are these people really shooting 80 yard birds or do they have an exagerated idea of distance or range?

I'm not sure, I loaded for a couple of guns last year who were using 32gm 5's on "unexeptional" birds (Partidge & Pheasant mixed) who both more or less said they only wanted a dead in the air kill. No thought about eating the remains!

What's wrong with 32g 5's? Must be really pish birds if they are being wrecked with that!!!

How would a man that wears a skirt know what a good bird was?

Get down here to the Welsh Borders and see what tall birds look like.

I can assure you that 32g 5's are not big enough.

+1

I beat at Kincarden Castle, a Glen Devon...some of the drives there are more birds beyond 80 yds than closer!!! 36g 4's with plenty choke makes a good job of them, there are three seperate guns who shoot a pair of 34" Brownings...

Ive been lucky enough to shoot some very good birds on beaters days, one or two exceptional birds too...I've also seen my share of pish birds!!!

So 80 yard birds are in range then with the right placement and cartridge.

You just have to wonder if the person shootingnat them is capable when they have no idea of what they need to be shooting at them.

One bloke nearly left the shop with some 40g 4's to go through a 20 bore! Ouch!

There are some very good shoots there and in Mid Wales poacher Bettws Hall is a big set up with and number of well known estates under its ownership Brigands, Kempton, Measmawr Hall and Gregynog Hall with very tall birds where you would need the some big loads, but as you say you have to put the shot in the right place :hunter:

Shortlegs,

Those are some of the shoots that I shoot and load on.

28boreshot, I have read Payne Galways treatise on High Pheasants, where he propounds that 30 grams of 6's will pull down very high pheasants. Yes, both he and you are correct, you may mortally wound a bird and it will expire, but sadly it takes a while for them to expire and  be picked a long way back to where they struggled. I don't like to see that and prefer them dead in the air from a big shock load.

I normally use a 28 gauge, but for tall birds I use 12 gauge 3/4 choke.

Full and extra full for me....just saying

Hi Salopian Ive loaded at Brigands for a roving syndicate they used to take back to back days and do Vaynor park as well, and been to some other well known estates with them, Stoke Edith being one and had two great days with them at the Badminton estate where they have mixed drives of partridge and pheasants showing good high birds.

On the other hand ...I've been known to walk off a shoot where birds were being blown to bits, not saying that you don't need a heavy load at times though . You try picking out eight or nine brace of nice birds for the guns at the end of the day who have used exteme heavy loads that wasn't needed .

have too agree too disagree bud..as a picker myself i stand back on some shoots and why people want too use such heavy loads for normal high pheasant and blow stuff too bits just because someone has said you must buy 34/36 gram 4's too kiil birds sorry its crap ..years ago we didnt have these loads we had eley impacts etc and numder 4's were saved for fox days... but we still had are country side and still had good sport...myself i use a 28 bore most of the time but when i do use 12 bore i use gamebore pure gold 28 gram 6 and believe me not many people would want too back gun me!!!

so many times ive been out coaching young boys on a game day and dad is on next peg and misses a good high bird and son swings through it and kills it as sweet as a nut with 19 grams of 28bore...  put it up the front end of the bird your kill it..

enjoy your season everyone.. :good:

Don't disagree with you buddy never used that heavy a load either most Ive used been 32g black gold fibre 6 , never said you have to use 34/36g 4's and don't doubt bringing em down with smaller gauges as I said you have to put the shot in the right place. must be crossed wires there .

Hi mate, that was attached to salopains reply bud....and not crossed wires with you sandwich. Looking forward to friday..
