When I started shooting , I was amazed that there were cash prizes. I had previously spent crazy money on motorsport and not a penny was ever on offer in return. But of course once people are used to it, they expect it and criticise how it is regulated. Tricky to change something once established..

True enough Will. Very difficult to change an established reward system but I do still wonder why it gets to people so much? On most Reg shoots it would barely cover people's costs. For me, it's all about the score not what I could potentially win..

..... I guess I am lucky though in a way as I'm not even close to being in the running for a cash prize and it will probably be some time yet before I am.

A crazy thought I know.

But it would be really interesting to see the level of interest and the number of entries if shoots only offered a cheap trophy as prizes and lowered the entry fee as not having to boost a cash prize fund . Would clayshooting be more popular and more affordable??

I reckon you are on to something there Peter.....

I remember winning a beaten up trophy and a very cheap medal when my cricket and rugby teams used the win the league or a cup. For us, it was all about the win and recognition of being champions....

Not a crazy idea at all, trophies are always a momento to keep. Money just gets spent but clayshooting has never been a cheap sport.

At the moment the majority are paying for the minority who win money.

As a complete noob to this sport I see the posts to the competions posted. So a couple of questions for you.

Does registered shoot mean it's with an organisation (CPSA) so counts towards your class?

What's the usual entry fee?

Do referees on each stand get paid or is it like marshalling at motor sports where they do it cause they enjoy it?

Do the top 3 from each class get a prize (unless high gun gets his own no matter the class and one prize from that class he's from gets removed)?

Yes.

£30-£45 depending where you go. £5 less for birds only(no prize).

Yes. They get paid.

High seperate from classes. Classes normally top 3 if attended well.

My op was not about money it just happens to be there. It was about AAA at reg shoots. At the moment you have the very best in the same class as the not so very best.

Will- I think there is as much dedication in lower classes as there is in AA. It is not all about money and time. It's about the right people being in the correct class for their abilities.

hence AAA at reg shoots.

i got a 3rd in class at Gunsite last year my first cpsa placing i was really happy about that the 30 gbp didn't matter and it wouldn't have paid my entry, not saying i am flush just that it was a small percentage of the total cost of the day.

couple of months ago i won one of our local non cpsa shoots in a shoot off against a county champion,i won 40 gbp.

nearly forgot to collect my winnings as i was so chuffed to have beaten him, meant far more to me than the money.

on the subject of trophies i have won a few and the missus tells me not to bring anymore as she hates cleaning them, but our local shoots either give bottles of wine or one that has specific trophy/cash classes gives a free re-entry for winning trophy.

yes it's nice to win a trophy but if it is just generic rather than specific/custom it just fills the shelves with wood and plastic that looks the same and if you cannot differentiate one from the other its only the quantity that means anything,no real memories to be had there.

to be honest i do not think most shoots could be arsed to even get the plaques custom engraved unless it was a "major" comp with a trophy that is held for a year before being passed on.

and if your any good unlike myself unless you have a large house they are going to end up in the attic/garage!

When I was younger I had the same beliefs as some of the above threads and would often beat myself up over my scores. I then became involved with running what could be described as a 'straw baler' but without the bales. After 17 years of every weekend spent listening to peoples moans and groans as to why they had shot badly, the sky was the wrong colour for their glasses, can't see the orange clays against the sky, can't see the black clays aginst the trees, the teal is too far out, the rabbit is too close, the traps should be lettered and not numbered, someone in the next County farted just as I was about to shoot. and so on,  Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. I now go with a small group of like minded old Bar Stewards, we do not shoot registered anything, we visit several grounds, usually midweek and preferably with good scoff, we still keep score,  but solely so that we can try to better that next time out. We try, if possible to shoot several disciplines, but the main thing is we shoot because we ENJOY it. I get more satisfaction seeing the registered scores for the 'Sunday' shoot, knowing that I had shot the same course the following Wednesday and often equaling the B class or sometimes higher. So if your shooting has become a class war you may be overlooking the one thing that you are there to achieve,...............................SELF SATISFACTION.

Spot on Westley.

I'm usually propping up the bottom end of the score list when I shoot a registered but I bet you I have a bigger smile when I have finished shooting than a lot of the shooters up near the top. The day I stop smiling at the end of a shoot is the day I will sell my gun and kit and find another sport....
