Budget cartridges

Hello all, this is my first post on the forum. I have been browsing for some time and only just signed up. Anyhow, I have access to ace shooting supplied locally and I am wondering which cartridges to buy. He sells them per slab for the equivalent 1000 price resulting in me always buying by the 250. I have tried a lot of the high end cartridges, but shooting 150 a week, I can't justify the additional cost. On the budget end I have tried, olympic blues, sporters (only available at doveridge I think) and clever super targets. I was not overly impressed with them apart from the Olympic blues, controversial I know. I don't mind a bit of dirt though. My question is, what its the general consensus on Eley firsts, fiocchi top ones and Cheddite universal trap? Thank you all, sorry for such a drawn out question!

I use top ones as they are cheap, available in all sizes and go bang. Also heard a rumour that they pattern well but I've never tried to prove it.

The cheapest cartridges are better than 90% of all shooters. Don't believe the hype and the high brass.

I've used a variety. Only been shooting for about 6 months or so. Express English Sporters/power Blue seem to be a good cartridge for the price. About £165/1000

What sort of budget you looking at?

Shoot the cartridge that you like, Nothing wrong with any of them, if youre price driven, buy the cheapest and learn the charectaristics of that shell....

I have been using Fiocchi TT1 which are a good price from my supplier and I find very soft to shoot - small female.  Sporters too punchy for me.

We sell Fiocchi TT1 plus Rio Target load - which are I think the same as Eley Olympic, both brands being made by Maxam. The Fiocchi are definitely softer than the Rios and kill well but I prefer the Rio's personally, you need fear no target with the Rio's!! I dont bother with the more expensive stuff but it often comes down to confidence in the cartridge.

Good Morning all

Cartridges are a very personal thing.  Pretty much all of the cheaper shells break all of the targets out there, so I would buy 500 of each and shoot them through until you find one that suits.  Certainly for me and my son, the Fiocchi Top Ones (TT1's) break monster targets (you should see what my son breaks with 2 x 3/8ths choke), are easy on the shoulder and the pocket to boot!  I love those Jockers in 24grm, but they are difficult to get a hold of, where the Fiocchis are freely available for me.

I take it the brands you have asked about are what's readily available to you within a reasonable price range! So I'm not going to rattle on about what I generally use. Having shot all three cartridges in order my preference would be:

1.Cheddite universal Trap

2.Fiocchi T1

wouldnt touch Eley firsts if they came with free Havana cigars, rum and a pole dancer to load my gun!

Thank you everyone! I think I will just have to systematically go through all the in stock carts up to £170 a thou. Thanks for the note on recoil Sian, however I quite enjoy a bit of punch, not World Cup or the gamebore mammoths standards  though! Biggish chap, 6,3 so not too recoil sensitive. I will have to see what they are like!

Funnily enough I can understand what you mean as enjoying it but I shoot too many to subject my body to unnecessary extra recoil and I also,find too much recoil interferes with taking my second shot as smoothly as I would like.

Yeh, i like 24g skeet cartridges and a punchy 28g for sporting

The term budget is subjective to be fair. Use what you can reasonably afford and are comfortable with because at the end of the day the cartridge is rarely the problem when it comes to breaking the target.

The only way you can sell a cartridge cheap is to load one with a smaller amount of faster burning powder the only saving the manufacture can make is a tiny percent on cheap lead ( it still needs transport from Turkey ) the case wad and primer are fixed price so go for a powder that only uses 19 grains rather than 22 and every 7 cartridges you save the powder of one cartridge .

 But the result is increased recoil unfortunately you can't have cheap and smooth

And the other side is with  clever marketing and hype they can quite successfully charge you way more for very similar stuff

Well I disagree and I base that on Clever Super Target 24g 9s. They are not just smooth and cheap but also one of the cleanest cartridges I've ever used!

Add to that Rio Target Load 24g 9s, 7s and 28g 7s & 8s! But that's just my opinion!
