HI guys.

What's the truth with regards to choke  and shot string.

I have heard that tighter choke gives you a longer shot string and I've also heard that it give you a shorter shot string as well.

I have also heard tigher chock also helps with long range targets, no just because of the tigher patter helps to extend the range but allow  a greater margin of error to allow the target to make contact with the greater longer shot strong? ?

What's your views and e experience on this guys?

Cheers

Steve.

Tighter the choke the shorter the string. Tighter chokes keep the pattern together for longer (less spread) so more pellets are more likely to hit a long range clay than a more open choke.

And this could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on

A long shot string won't give you a larger margin for error due to the fact the time it takes to pass the clay is minuscule, so the clay barely moves.

tighter chokes are better if you plan on shooting lots of long stuff, however most people's understanding of range is a bit off shall we say, so what you think of as long may only be 40 or so yards.

put in half/half and you are set for life

Ok thanks for your advice guys, it is much appreciated.

I dont seem to find my clay shooting much of a problem, sporting I use quater and half of half and half like you suggested.

I seem to be searching for what to use for pheasants, walked up and nice driven birds nothing Exstream, I have been using 32 gram 6s  (Black Gold )   I want to cover all occasions if you like, from close range to our to say 50 yatds etc.

I think I'm setting myself and leaning towards half and half for all occasions, if there is a close flushed bird, just allow it to get away a little before shooting and have the nice half choke combined with a decent 32 gram load to fill the pattern for longer shots.

I also have some 36 gram 6s but have not used them yet.

What's your thoughts guys?

Thanks again .

Steve

I have only shot a couple of days end of last season and 5 days so far this season but in my limited experience 32g no5 (black gold are a size bigger than stated) through half and half will be spot on for anything non specialist high bird, you may want to drop to 28g true 6 for walked up or for Partridges. 36g 5's will just give you a headache..

Cheers thanks fo that mate.

When you say that black gold are a size bigger, do you mean that a number 6 is actually a size 5 of do you mean a 6 is actually a number 7?

ThaThanks for your advise mate.

If it says 6 on the cartridge its roughly 5 to 5 1/2 inside, Any gamebore diamond shot cartridges such as black gold, blue diamond etc and hull high pheasant extreme are all continental shot sizes, so 6's are 5's, 5's are 4 1/2's roughly speaking.

Just buy a side by side, do not bother about what the choking is, shoot 28 grams of 6's at everything, except really high pheasants (and my I/C and 3/4 choke has yet to let me down on them too), then all you have to worry about is the auto safe and 2 triggers !        sorted.

god no, I hate side by side . wellnthwellnthwy are notfor me, especially as I shoot so much clays as well.  I like to stick to the same gun, it's better to stick to somthing that works the flick between different  set ups etc.

Might just stick in half and half and that should cover everything I intend to do for game.  If the birds are a little close then just allow them to get a little further  out before pulling the trigger.

Steve

It may be of interest to some, I recently loaded on a very high bird shoot and one of the guns acquitted himself very well shooting a gun choked tru-cylinder in both barrels his cartridge was 32grams of 5's

um, does this substantiate my past posts re cartridge choice being a possible alternative to different chokes ?

I took 11 pheasant and two partridge yesterday, all with 30gr 6's through 3/4-1/2 fixed chokes.

furthest was 45 yards closest around 30.

regards

mike

I take it then you are an experienced shooter if you have used and then condemned a side by side. I presume it was of a Welsh manufacture by the makers name 'Wellnthwellnthwy' not one that I am familiar with, I have to say. I take your point about a side by side not being suitable for clays, but it can be done. (bit like an auto for Trap really !). I would go with the 1/2 and 1/2 and if driven game, just take them well in front. I feel sure you will be OK. Oh, by the way do you like Pheasant soup ?

Yep black gold 6 is closer to a UK 5 but many manufacturers are following suit as people want to shoot higher and higher birds, the Gentila waving 'our 6 kills better than anyone else's' (although it's because it's a 5) marketing message is a popular one. Same thing happened with golf clubs, increasing strength of a given reference to hit further..

Cartridges you have will be great for purpose you intend.  If you did want to try something for walked up then 28g no6 in Hull Imperial Game or 6.5 in Hull Driven Grouse are excellent.

Depends entirely where you are shooting. Your regular stuff very little choke and a 32g 6 is plenty.

if you do go to a real high bird shoot I wouldn't entertain anything less that 3/4 and 4s

Yes matey, I am an experienced shooter, clays and game, i've shot for over 28 years despite being 34.

I tried side by side years ago, shot well with them but never gave me the edge when it came to competition with clays etc for obvious reasons......I also just prefer the O/U  as well as performing better with it.

As for gun manufacturer,  that was meant to say " don't suit me any way" or somthing like that, predictive typing ..

Thanks for your reply.

Thanks  for your reply Ed, makes sense mate.  Its just I'm doing a lot of walk and stand type shooting where there are pheasants and partridge being driven towards us, not really that high but some birds being good crossers, I'd just fancy being chocked up a little to help with the longer birds as and when. ;-)

Would be interested in some coaching as well Ed if you can point me in the right direction on how to go about it mate.

Cheers

Steve

If it's a walk one stand one mate 1/4 will be absolutely plenty, don't let it worry you too much.

can private message here or use website, Facebook twitter etc!

cheers,

ed
