Confused !

So yesterday I had my first real coaching session with someone (won't say who or where for now).

The first thing that happened was I was told I had bought the wrong gun & paid too much.

I have bought a Lanber Sporter from Ladds for £535.00.

It would seem this gun has been altered with an increased cast ?

I was told I would never be consistent until it was straightened and that it was a waste of time me practicing a correct mount until it was fixed, or changed.

So a downer, before we had even started.

Now here is where I was confused.

Incoming bird - 8 from 12

R-L Bird - 6 from 8

Rabbit - 10 from 12

L-R Bird - 7 from 10

I thought that was pretty good for the first time I had ever fired it ?

So if it is so wrong, how come I am hitting things ?

I went to a different gunshop on the way home, (can't resist at the moment), and it came up in conversation. They looked at it and agreed it was a little too cast for me, and that I probably would benefit from a straight stock, but that that was down too me, and not the gun.

It's all a little too much to take in !!

Dont go back to chappy #1, sounds like a mug.

Cant say much without seeing you but he sounds more keen to get you spending cash on a new gun than getting you to improve. A bit too much/not enough cast is neither here nor there for you at the moment, as you found out when you were shooting.

Chappy #1 probably sells guns, or at least gets commission.  No doubt he will be able to "recommend" where to get your new gun from!!  :sarcastic:

Sorry to hear about this experience.  I can understand you being depressed by it all. Ladds supposedly offer a try before you buy service - was this not offered?  Was the question of gun fit raised?  No doubt your lesson cost you £50 quid or more for an hour plus clays so so far your first meetings in the clay shooting world have knocked your confidence.  Not a good way to start out shooting but you seem to have done well in hitting the clays so you have to take comfort from that and perhaps find someone else for your lessons.  This is one of the reasons why I have not yet committed to a batch of lessons as I want to wait until I have retired and hopefully my son and I can go together.  That way I can get straight in and practice what I've been taught and not forget it all before the next time I can shoot.

I know where you're coming from and would agree but I'm just about to have a hip replacement so will be out of action for a while and then I'll be retired and can start seriously

Nothing wrong with a lanber as a starter gun.Many of people have probably started the them.

Yes and you will trade up next year most probably. 

Saw a guy last week who had bought a Lanber Field(new to him) other fella I was with picked it up and said it comes up nice for him and then passed it to me and I said yup it would do, we both knew it was a lefty but the guy who bought it never realised the cast was way off to the other way for him being a righty.

Too many people pick up the price tag before picking up a gun to see if it fits, you will shoot more with a gun that fits than with a price tag that fits.

As it was niggling me I went back to Ladds today to discuss it. 

They were brilliant, more than happy to give me a full refund if I wanted, but disagreed totally with the coaching chap.

They asked if I had 20 minutes free to shoot a few and I agreed to give it a try with the same Lanber.

After missing the first 2 , the young lad there went through why it was happening, and corrected a few things I was doing.

Then hit 10 out of 10 ! and a double at the end just to prove a point.

They were still happy to change it if I wanted, but in there opinion it is perfect for me, especially as my first one.

So, onward with some practice now

Much happy to move forward.

Anyone fancy Ashcombe for a few ?

Reminds me of a Coach based around here.

Three years ago stated I needed my gun altered during the first lesson.

Tape and temporary adjustments made then said I needed four more lessons to be 'sure' before he would make the changes.

I said surely he should know and make changes permanent then have further lessons.

Never made the alterations as I binned him soon after.

Careful of the numpties out there.
