I've been using cheap sponge ear protection, and its either block out everything or nothing, and i want to try & stop wincing in anticipation, i tried a mates electronic ear protection and it was great, the main blast was suppressed, and i could even her the trap releasing over a hill, and people talking 20 yards away, the only thing i didnt do was shoot while wearing them to see if they are comfy and not going to get in my way.

I tried the Passive ear plugs, but they didnt work for me at all.

so can i ask whats your preference..?

MSA Sordin headphones. Put them on so that the buttons are on the side that you put the stock. There is a cut out shape to that ear, which misses the stock. The only ones if have found usable. Superb.

One word of caution, which will bring howls of protest from the electronic ear defender manufacturers.

Due to the delay in the circuitry before cutoff, if you wear electronics all day at a big shoot such as when refereeing or coaching if you wear electronics only you may end up with a banging headache.

I use foam plugs AND MSA Sordin's.

Don't go electronic. Big waste of money and you can hear what people say under their breath about you...............!!!

If you value your hearing, max protection muff's are what's needed.

Only good if they have a built in Radio so I don't have to listen to somebody tell me every target they have missed inbetween stands etc! :p :p

These are my preference : http://shootclay.co.uk/2011/10/25/review-emtec-noisebreakers/ - a few on here have also tried them and like them... you can get electronic versions of these, but significantly more spendy.
This is what I will probably go for.

At the mo, I use those ten quid passive ones, Bisley I think.

I have seen the moulded ones, with the same passive filter in them...are the noise breakers better than those?

I think they are better - because the fit is better. They are probably not as good as the very expensive electronic (Although those have their issues) - but for me, they are the best. I cannot wear Headphone style ones as I get too hot.

I use ACS sonic valve custom moulds - can't fault them in any way (apart from I forget Im wearing them sometimes)

I use Peltor Sportac's which are very comfortable and are also electronic.

I find them too warm in the summer so will also be getting some of the Emtec once for use in warmer weather.

Jon.

At the skeet home international in Ireland last weekend ,got talking to a guy at the shoot (he's a surgeon )and he informed me that according to some hearing specialist's he'd been chatting to, wearing plug's alone is not enough, you should wear plug's with defender's over the top as they now believe a lot of hearing loss is caused by the impact of sound through the bone around the ear and not just through the ear hole itself .

If that's the case, and I can believe it, I'm going out tomorrow and buying full muff style protection, sod the expense, as being blind is one thing but being deaf as well, I don't stand a chance.. ;-)
