My wife and I have recently received our SGC, but we still don't own guns yet.

I've been shooting with a friend who when opening his gun, he tilts it so the barrels are pointing up and the spent cartridges go directly into the bin,

I’ve seen others open there guns and catch/grab the cartridges and just throw them into the bin. This looks better, and I’d like to practice it when I get my own gun.

I’ve read about snap caps, but they will be heavier than spent cartridges, I also read you shouldn’t fire of the action in an empty gun or you may cause damage to the firing pins.

I was thinking of using spent cartridges, but again this may damage the firing pins? Or should I just practice when I go shooting? I did open the gun when shooting with my friend, the two spent cartridges hit me square in the head, no pain or anything, just embarrassing, I won’t do it again.

Thanks for your advice

Hi Dave, personally I open my gun with the barrels pointing away from anyone and open the top leaver, I let the spent cases eject into the palm of my hand, extract them with my hand and put them in the bin. Each to there own really, as long as it's safe, and if I'm trap shooting I don't put them in the bin until the person to my right has shot ( unless I'm on peg 5) and always have gun empty when moving from peg 5 to 1

I can't be much help on the snap caps front, I don't use them

Hope this helps

+1  Do this and you won't go far wrong.

Correct ettiquette will win you admirers. Bad ettiquette will lose you friends.

Don't concern yourself about ejecting the cartridges as being the most skillful part of your shooting. You are disposing of a waste product.

I'm embarrassed to say I got the snap caps to practice just this. When I started shooting, ejecting into the bin was half the fun (post shooting beer payment was based on that score, not how many clays got hit!).
Got told off first time out in the UK for letting them fly (safely into the bin), so had to learn how to catch them out of the ejector. I quite liked practicing the drill of opening, ejecting into the hand, reloading, bring to shoulder, repeat.
I went for snap caps after reading something about someone mistaking some new carts for spent ones and an accidental discharge in the house...

Precisely!    'Nuff said!      Don't think it won't happen to you because s**t happens!

Thanks guy's

I won't be embarrassed to use snap caps, i just won't tell anyone, but you guys.     Mistakenly puting a live cartridge when practicing  would be disastrous, so i certainly won't do that

Other than the etiquette referred too, I'd say you'll find the method that's best for you as you shoot. Don't worry about it too much.

I always find that when shooting trap its best to slightly angle the gun to the right and let the spent shells eject.this usually breaks the ice with your fellow squad members and gets everyone talking.its a very friendly sport.

...ejecting spent cartridges into the guy to the right's bin before he shoots is the ultimate ice breaker!!!

I was told to turn the gun on its side, holding the stock against you with your elbow and then use that hand to cover, ready to catch the cartridges. I nearly got socked by a high flying spent cartridge that rocketed out with some force.

Moral of the story, don't stand in the way.

I watch a guy on 'The schools challenge' open his gun and eject them into the air, then using his hand he smacked them into the bin like a tennis shot!!
