Gun Fitting Now or Later

Hi,

I have enrolled in a series of lessons whilst my ticket (hopefully) arrives. It has been suggested that I should try few guns out during the lessons, with a view to purchasing one before the my ticket arrives. The shooting ground (and shop) would be happy to store the gun whilst I wait for a my ticket and it would allow me to use it on my lessons.

I can see how this would be a good thing, learning too shoot with my own gun etc. The cinical side of me can see this would also be a confirmed gun sale from them and no one else.

The question I have is should I have the gun fitted now whilst I'm still learning the techniques or do I shot the gun 'as is' and have it fitted later or hold fire (excuse the pun) and continue to hire guns for the near future.

Famous last words but I donty't have a criminal records or medical conditions and get regularly screened through my work so hopefully I shouldn't have an issue witha  ticket (fingers crossed).

Canm I have any of your thoughts on the correct steps to take as a newbie shooter?

Yes, get your own gun. Make sure that the person selling it can see that it fits approximately, and this will likely mean they have to bend you around to make you hold it like an experienced shot. It's no good chucking a gun into the arms of a newbie and seeing if they can see down the rib while standing and holding it wrongly.

Do not worry about paying extra for "gun fitting". Buy one that fits about right, shoot for a year and then re examine the fine detail.

I'm 6ft 2in and expect the stock will need lengthening as a minimum.

Of course, add a correct butt pad (I recommend an ISIS one from recoil systems) but leave tricky woodwork stuff for now..

Garry, that is NOT always the case. I have known many 6' plus shooters who have had very short arms, especially when it came to getting the teas in !

Never , ever , buy your own gun.

Always borrow one , let someone else clean, pay for it and maintain it.

Just go along to any ground, you will always find someone daft enough to lend you one .
