Hi, just introducing myself. My name is Simon and I'm located between Preston and Blackpool. (About a mile away from Blackpool Sporting Clays)

I have wanted to get into the sport for a while but haven't been able to until now. I have filled in and sent off the application for my Shotgun Licence and now just waiting.

I'm going to go to BSC a few more times before I invest in a gun but I was wondering what you would advise... I have been to Malmo and they have been very helpful, suggested what would be better suited to myself and so I'm just seeing what other people use etc

My intention is purely clays, what's the difference between trap and sporting guns?

Any help is really appreciated :)

Regards,

Simon

Hi Simon, if you are only shooting sporting, you need a over and under designated for "Sporting" its designed for clays, not a game gun! Multi choke, make not too important, what feels right for you. It will be a while till you settle into your individual style, (we all shoot differently!) Most of all enjoy it!

Hi Simon welcome .  A trap gun shoots higher than a sporting ,  normally fixed chokes , and in my humble opinion harder to shoot gun-down .

Ive tried both and found that it's  harder to shoot spotting with a trap than a trap with a sporting .  but some people do . someone with more knowledge than I will no doubt explain further

Hello Simon.

Take someone experienced with you not associated with a gun shop to purchase your gun. A second opinion.

Have a good drive around don't buy the first gun you like. Ask to try first.

Ask at shoots to may be try a gun most shooters only to happy to oblige.

Negotiate hard you can buy more shells then.

After buying it enjoy it.

Enjoy the forum and welcome.

Hi Simon

Welcome.

R Bamfords in Eccleston, Nr Chorley is worth a visit, great bunch of blokes in there. If you purchase a gun, they give you 7 days to bring it back if it don't suit you and a 3 month warranty, which I think most dealers do anyway.

There is also Macavoys in Standish, they don't have the selection of Bamfords but worth a visit anyway.

Thank you all for the replies. That has given me something to go from :)

I have my eye on a Cynergy. 12G. Over and Under, 30inch and adjustable comb.

It seemed to feel right and apparently everything fit where it should, I just need to wait for my licence to come through before I can try it. I think the gun store(s) I go to would be in for a long day ;)

Do any of you go to BSC?

I can't wait to get started and see where it takes me :)

Get a good used B525 or B425. Or almost any Beretta 682 or 686..

It's often the case that your first gun will get sold on after a year or so, either for real or "in the head" reasons. Either way, you want one that will be easily saleable and hold value..

Thank you both :) I have around the 1500 or more mark to spend. So whatever fits me, holds value, is stylish and I can shoot would be good :)

Welcome...exciting times ahead!!!

I've been shooting 2 years now and started with a beretta silver pigeon 28 inch...loved it, shot well then sold it after 9months for a better feeling gun, a Miroku Mk70 30 inch grade 5! Stunning wood, can't beat a Miroku for value for money and feel, lovely lovely gun (mk38 v popular)!

I then sold it and bought a Blaser F3 Pro 32 inch...now this to me was engineering to the highest standard....beautiful grade 5 wood, perfectly balanced and a delight to shoot....sold it (unfortunately due to having too rather than wanting too)

Now have a Benelli Supersport semi auto....love it, shoot it well

Enjoy the clays, enjoy the guns and meet some lovely people
