Jake, you said;-. "You could always use the Ignore button."

I don't need to friend, if I could use the emoticons on this thread I could have said 'I hope we don't need 194 posts and then a smiley' . Did not mean to offend you.

Skeet UK, You are very correct in your dealing with battues, in so much as 'boxing them' does work, it normally needs to be an oblong box rather than a square one (smiley).

But despite believing that you have given them enough lead, invariably we haven't. Practice makes perfect.

Or completely screws you up (smiley).

No offence taken Salopian, I misjudged your tone, apologies. Another new term to me "Boxing" what''s the idea there? Is it just a description of what we've just been talking about?

@ Jake.  From my understanding of it, you imagine a rectangle...size is subjective, but probably twice as wide as it is high.  If the clay comes in at the top left had corner, you put your shot at the bottom right hand corner.  Same as straight line intercept, but the bits of the box help with placement.

@Salpoian.  Is my description correct ish?  I really need help with this.  weirdly, I have smoked long Bats in the past, but these ones yesterday were fast and closer.  I think I did not have enough time to assemble me box!

I believe that you can also use the principle of the box/rectangle for a looper where the top of the loop is in the centre of the top line of your imaginary box and it comes in at bottom left you aim at bottom right to kill it.

Yes you are both correct.

With a straight crosser we can use the line of flight and know or estimate a required lead. With a Battue, Chondelle or Rocket looper we have difficulty in adjusting lead and line. Visualise a rectangular box and put the clay in a corner and lead it by placing the barrels in the diametrically opposite corner. Obviously you will need to simulate your problem target to train in this method but I can assure you it is effective and works very well. As an added tip, visualise or estimate your usual amount of lead for a normal crosser and then apply just a little bit more lead for your problem target.

Difficult to explain on paper but easy to coach you into doing it.

I can see all the newbies working out their box size now (laugh out loud).

Can I also add .....that on exactly the same one target.....10 people will see the box size in 10 different ways....because....the box size depends on your perception and skill of execution. (wink).

Completely agree here - one of the key learnings for me over the last few weeks of 'retraining my head' is that my four foot, is another's three, is someone else's eight.   So I'm giving up asking "what did you give that?" and trying to not tell anyone "what I gave that second bird" - because I'm learning that 1. I don't know, and 2. they don't either.

talk about over-complicating matters!
Yes, I think this would drive me to self-harm..... :yell:

For what it's worth, I don't do the box thing and I don't cut across underneath the arc of the clay.

I'm no AAA Class whizz shooter but I can hit loopers and battues all day long at any range and any speed.

I either hit them at the top of their arc, by swinging through/pulling away horizontally or whatever I fancy (Not UNDERNEATH the arc, but at the top of it). At other times, I hit them when they start to drop, by slicing the barrels slightly downwards through it as it drops. Same as at the top of the arc, but on the tilt

Hard to explain. I could draw it, but can't be arsed.

Anyway, there's more than one way to skin a gift horse.....

Edit, I've drawn it......art for art's sake......Huzzah!

What pen do you find best for illustrating?
The red one is a "Corporate Express" and the black one is a "Sharpie".

It's amazing isn't it?

I used maintained lead with the "Sharpie" -_-

Incidentally, the spiral-bound notebook is a "Spectrum" from Poundland. 2 for £1 because I'm a cheap sh*t....

That looks amazing!
I quite agree, the colours complement each other nicely and the vertical lines, really help get a feeling of distance.

Looks like a Gebben Miles DVD ;)

So, I also have used these methods...so I guess that means that my ability to suss the lead is out of wack / practice.

Richard,

What is the scale please?

In the two examples shown you have missed.

Perhaps if you had put a box round your drawing and used Straight Line Intercept?

Lift the scale from your eyes if you want to see the rabbit from the trees......
