Hi, I am a new member and relatively new to shotgun. I have been shooting target rifles and deer stalking for a few years, then got told by someone that I'd never be able to shoot a shotgun as it would be too difficult for me.....red rag to a bull scenario! I tried, found out it was possible and really enjoy it. So now focusing on shotgun instead of target. I am paralysed from the chest down, so have no core or balance. I have to shuffle my backside forward in my wheelchair and then have a chest strap. However, doing that means I can use a shotgun and be safe. Now doing DTL and Sporting 100. Always looking to learn and wish to improve and see what level I can attain.
Great to hear your are enjoying your shooting!
Lots of trap disciplines are very accessible to wheelchair users.
Compact sporting (which is probably what you have been doing), using 5 'cages' as shooting positions is too.
Regular sporting might need a 4x4 wheelchair at some grounds!
Also look at Skeet.
Something to consider if it became an issue;
a friend who shot from a chair, found that because his back was against the back of the chair, he felt a bit more recoil than he would have liked.
He ended up getting a recoil reducing stock, called a PFS (Pecision Fit Stock, not cheap, but there you go) which pretty much completely remove recoil.
They are also very adjustable, which can help fit the gun to people who are using it from a less conventional shooting position.
You can also retrofit recoil reducers onto wooden stocks (Recoil Systems ISIS2).
An obvious alternative is to use a semi-automatic shotgun, which also tend to recoil less.
Have fun!
