And what happens when a good break gives you confidence ?

Yes I would rather have 10 chips than 9 balls of dust, but I would rather have 10 good breaks (not balls of dust)  than any of them. It means I am doing it right and that gives me confidence.

A stand where I have had 4 clips and it can play on my mind for the next 4, a stand with 4 good kills and I am calm and confident. The score might end up the same but its how I feel.

If you are different to me then fair play to you, it works for you, but it's not a load of sh*t to me.
Exactly what i said SHOOT WITH WHAT GIVES YOU CONFIDENCE.

If you need to see a ball of dust so be it, to me a break is a break.

Yes except some breaks are trying to tell you you're about to miss; can't rely on chips all the way through, batter'em I say.

Was once told by a coach if you are chipping the front/back edge off a target don't change anything on that stand you are breaking them and they count.

Why change anything and chance overleading/missing behind just to try and dust them.

agree, from a trap point of view i want to see dust, chips are trying to tell you something. Apart from that dusting a hard low right hander at ot for instance gives you a great feeling of confidence a chip on same target makes you think wow that was a lucky kill and could from my experience make you change something mid line and we know what happens then....

Yes that is an interesting article.  Being new to this I am probably far slower than those more experienced and my 1/4 choke shot cloud is probably dissipating fast by the time I'm ready to pull the trigger and miss and yet I can hit it with 1/2 choke in the second barrel.

Looks like I shall be giving half and half a whirl sometime soon!

isnt the point to find a choke that will give you the same central string and the statistically best chance if you are a little 'wobbly' some outliers to pick up targets where you would otherwise have totally missed? surely a chip from an outlier is better than a total clean miss from a full choke?

reading that article it says the core 15" is the same for any choke hence why many proport to hit 70yd crossers with IC/SK....

A chip is a loss waiting to happen...
Maybe but it goes on the card as a hit,and at the end of the day it's scores on the doors that count.

Bet you wish you had chipped target 99 on sunday!

Just saying......

:) nope, clean miss sadly! But if I didnt read the breaks on a couple of fast crossers earlier on Id have been more than 1 away thats for sure!

Did you chip clay 97/98 at Grange Farm by any chance...???
Sorry james miss read that. yes got a weak break on 97, and over adjusted. However there were several occasions where it had the desired effect of centring the next couple of pairs correctly and cementing a solid sight picture for me. Maybe cost me 1, probably gave me 3...

Sorry I must have misunderstood your original post, I took it to say on the one hand you were telling me to shoot with whatever gave me confidence and on the other you were telling me it was bollox and a load of sh*te that I was getting confidence from the quality of my breaks.

Kind of a contradiction, I am still not too sure what you meant, I don’t want or need to see balls of dust but then again I don’t want to see chips either, they all score but my confidence is greater with just plain old good kills.

:thumbsu:

I have to disagree with this, taking chips off is a near miss and your mind knows it!
Qaulity of breaks is neither here nor there it's hit or miss you don't get bonus points for how well you break them.

You may get more satisfaction out of balls of dust which is fair enough, but what im saying is, a hit is a hit no matter if its dust,20 bits or a chip.

I just enjoy getting out shooting.

It is nice to see a ball of dust, but it doesn't dampen my confidence if i chip one either.

The more i break the more confident i am does not matter what the break is like, maybe thats just me everyone to their own.

Well yes a kill is a kill and a chip is better than missing when in a comp etc, but have you never made an "O" shape with your mouth and said Oooohh! when you just take a chip off, that's you telling yourself that you nearly missed that. But it's all part of the game and its all fun so like you say each to there own.

Done that loads of times

But in competition why change to much and chance a miss as in sporting you will only be seeing a max of 5 pairs on that stand,a chip is on the score card.

If you are out practicing then yes try and dust them as you have all day to shoot as many as you like.

spot on Jake

More chips than McCains at the weekend but posted a P.B. of 82 not bad for a lowly C class. now thats confidence.
