Hi guys I've been looking on and off at getting some custom ear protection, after calling my local hearing centre they offered me an appointment tomorrow morning so I went for it. Originally I was going to get the passives but it works out more expenseive to upgrade later so I'm thinking of going for the digitalis but which ones pro flex, pro flex2 or the competitions?

Cheers

Not particularly helpful but cheers
Well. Only because I have had cheap plugs, two sets of moulded, then finally got the right answer from MSA cans.. It is personal so I am not 'right'. But forums are for soliciting opinions. :)

I also have cans, peltor sporttac but I find they don't work for me. I fully understand it is personal preference. I just want to know if the proflex 2 or competitions are worth the extra money over the proflex 1 with one setting.

Thanks

Why don't they work for you? Genuine question. :)

I find they make my ears hot but they also hit the stock when I mount the gun.
AHA! Exactly why you should have MSA Sordin with gel inserts. They clamp very lightly so heat is reduced (I do use earplugs when it's really hot..) and (for the 1000th time if have said on here) MSA are a great shape and don't tap the stock, especially if you put the control button side where the stock is, as there is a cut out which clears the stock.
Enjoy :)

I am always amazed when I see those absolute horrors worn by Peter Wilson. Looks like a huge boob on each ear. Couldn't deal with that. There must be a trap related gun mount that I don't get to make those things work..

I don't think there is a one device fits all answer to this thread. I can only speak from industrial experience.

I have always worked in a noisy environment for over 55 years  initially I always used foam plugs.

As I got older and ear protection became more scientific and sometimes mandatory I was fortunate to talk to various people .

Noise can travel, we all know that because of the sound waves. Sound waves will travel until they are interrupted by a barrier or they dissipate.

For some years now I have worn Emtec moulded plugs or foam plugs with MSA Sordins over the top.

Now the conflict, some hearing specialists say that muffs are the best because they cover a greater area and also cover the bone (skull) around the ear.

Interestingly only last week a hearing specialist / lawyer whose business is claims against hearing loss said that foam plugs are the sure fire best solution!

I do think there could be an issue with the silicone rubber moulded EMtec & Cens type not sealing efficiently if you gain or lose weight.

So buyer beware, buy the best, use the best.

The best may not be the latest gadget on the market, do your research.

Hi

I have the CENS proflex passive plugs I like them I can still have conversations with them in, I may I futre get the digi upgrade if I were to it would be the proflex 2 comps.

I always found cans to hit my stock so did not want to spend lots of money on them to find they did the same so in ear for me.

Yoshi

Well you learn something new every day; is the cut out a recent addition Will? I used to have Sordins but never noticed it.

No, it's just the recess where the buttons are. Trouble is, it's on the wrong side for a rh shooter, so you need to wear them 'backwards'. Buttons on right ear. The only downside is that the microphones then point behind you, which is not ideal if you are trying to not hear the chatting mob. But I usually turn mine off while in cage.

Both trap gold medalist in London wore the massive Peltor muffs because they are the best in covered trap stands. I wear them over solid Emtec plugs but any muff is tolerable when I am outdoors at Sporting.  :music:

Ah, right. Yes, on the odd occasion shooting in a 'shed' the noise is a lot louder.. Ta.

Proflex digital2 have 2 modes. 1 for game shooting 2 for clays
Proflex competition also have 2 modes mode 1 for clays and solid plug simulation (mute)

Tom you need to way up all the facts before purchasing, personally if you only shoot clay hocks filters are specifically designed for that purpose. Come see me at the shooting show I can talk you through all the options!

Yes I would have to say that the Peltor  large muffs are possibly the industry standard for superior noise attenuation.

But of course Trap shooters have a a gun mounting routine that allows the gun to be mounted and correctly positioned before calling for the target.

Not really feasible with Fitasc if you want to avoid irritating and stock damaging collisions .

How long before clay shooters wear full face perspex visors, hard hat baseball hats such as worn in that sport, H.A.N.S. device neck braces etc etc You may laugh but it could come.
