You just cannot beat cleaning guns like they have done for donkeys years without any problems. All this new fangled rubbish is just that. But people buy it, they make money everyones happy.

Tried it this evening, holy cow that stuff is messy not too mention stinks a bit (open window next time)......still it didn't manage to do much except lighten my wallet by about £17 (posted), make a mess, and use up copious amounts of my Napier Super/Ultra Clean!

Can's been put in the garage now, where it will gather dust until hell freezes over! :D

Well, as a cleaner for general muck in the barrels I'm sure it works fine (as does the Napier stuff I already have), but for removing the leads streaks I have it doesn't seem to have touched it (left for 30mins to dwell).

I'm assuming the marks in my barrels CAN be removed, but I've yet to go at it with a drill and brass brush....!

Still I'm always up for trying a new product if it will make life easier. :)

I always cringe when I hear about drills being used. No way am I ever using a brush and drill down my barrels. Decent cartridges and a full length mop when barrels still hot......Job done.

Ed's Red is cheap to make and possibly one of the best.

Parker Hale 009 , tried and tested plus a wondrous smell .

Butch's Bore Shine will remove Lead fouling and the phlegm off your chest .

Agree. I also sometimes use Hoppes Bench Rest but a lot of these are best for copper fouling which isn't a big need for shotgun - and they do eat the bronze brush too!!

The type of fouling that I find most difficult to remove is plastic as this is something that is unique (I think) to plas wad / shotgun users.

Plastic fouling is probably self limiting but when the OCD sets in, a Payne Galloway brush and acetone (nail varnish remover/ superglue dissolver) seems to do the trick along with a liberal dose of elbow grease. Good on a cold night as it sure warms you up :)

Is a recipe for Ed's Red readily available?

Can it be put on here or is it subject to copyright, a patent or trademark etc?

I did a search on bingle and found quite a few recipes. There is a lot of information on contents, mixing and using. The recipes are dated and the ones I found are dated between 94-98. This link seems comprehensive but didn't see a date on it Recipe link here

Never had a problem with Legia (red) and my MK38. Though I understand that Ed's Red is supposed to be good.

What cartridges would you suggest?

Absolutely fantastic link.  Really interesting, thanks.

I'm using GB EVO's which I thought were pretty clean anyway.  Perhaps we should have a review/poll somewhere of tried and tested cleaners, as it gets expensive buying all of them! .  :)

Ive shot a wide variety of makes/types of clay cartridges through my guns over the last oooh 35 years, and never had a problem cleaning the barrels.

Yes i've had the odd piece of shot stick, but that just knocks off and any fouling just gets rubbed off with the old bronze brush and a squirt of Legia or some Hopps 009 if required.

I mostly use Power blues (Plastic) at the moment as they are a good price at the moment and dare i say it - one of the best 'shells' i have used in that price range.

English Sporter in Fibre - cheap and do the job. a bit punchy but they kill really well and no confetti - thats through 3/4 and full.
