I have to go with Hamster - gun fit.  In particular pitch.  It's been my experience that excessive (or for me - any) downpitch results in discernible recoil.  However you might measure it, next to nothing to zero works for me.  I've had guns that were next to unshootable fixed by nothing more than buzzing the stock to zero pitch or so.

Mote Carlo and appropriate rib is a distinct plus for neck things as well.  Been there done that

Autos usually have a substantial downpitch as well.  I have no bias against autos but they are just not for me for a number of reasons.

If you've ever wondered why the cumulative effects of recoil can be so troubling then watch the slomo shots particularly at approx 33 seconds and also at 3 minutes :




 
Great video.

Check out the slow-mo at 3 mins. See how the top lever moves (opens slightly) when the shot is fired. Looks very odd??

DT I believe you mean at 3:00? It actualy happens every time the shot is fired - see at 0:53 and 1:34:
