I think we all need to calm down and evaluate what we have and what we do.

I have a £50 K Beretta, a few Purdey's a H&H & three Boss plus Greeners .

I choose to shoot Miroku .

I also have Winchester & Beretta case throwers.

Nothing at all wrong with semi-autos if you like them and learn to use them, but more importantly it may be all you can afford.

Why did Duncan Lawton choose to shoot a Remington? Because it was what his father bought him and thought it was good enough.

Only last week a gentlemen said to me " Oh yes, it is alright Duncan using a Remington, because he has a bag of spares and can strip and repair one between stands if it breaks."

Yes Duncan can, because he has learned how to use one, how it works and how to strip, clean, and repair one. Guess what gun his son Matthew shoots?

Spares? Surprise, surprise, they have bought them and saved them.

Anthony Matarese used a Beretta 391 as a Beretta sponsored shooter, did very well with it, now at his sponsors behest he is using a DT11. It is taking a little time to get there.( But that is another story)

Three shot autos?  CPSA and clayshooting rules say no more than one in the breech and one in the magazine! Any more and you should be disqualified. Had it last week and he was disqualified, he protested. But now the lesson is ingrained.

Can't see if it is loaded or not ? If the bolt is forward it is loaded, or you assume it is . I have Safe T plugs for sale at £5 + P&P.

Semi -Auto jammed shut with live cartridge inside? Easy! Keep barrel pointing into air or down range, unscrew mag cap /forend nut , remove barrel assembly, remove live cartridge.

Each to his own, the issue of choice on here gets a bit like religion, the only valid one is the one held by the one espousing the virtues of their own or the evils of the others, I dont give damn what gun you shoot, just dont preach to me about the wrongs or rights of your choice.

an auto should always have a safety flag inserted into the barrel and sit in the chamber of the gun after completing a stand or be carried in a gun slip with the flag inthe barrel to show there are no live rounds in the chamber

I've never had a "flag" for an auto and I've shot them for over 30 years but I am very muzzle aware and always carry one muzzle up with the breech facing outwards.

I find it much more frightening when an O/U user takes his gun out of a slip without breaking it open while it's still in the slip, then waves it about before opening it. There's a group of shooters at one of my local grounds who shoot registered shoots  and nearly all of them act like this.

I've asked them to do it safely but the just ignore my request with the comment "I've done it for years like this".

By the sounds of it the entire ground is frequented by people who need to learn a little gun safety. You could get yourself a chamber flag and the others can be shown how to extract an O/U from a gunslip so it comes out open, its actually very easy to do...

Now, now, no need for sarcasm you know. I no longer own an auto and it's not up to me to teach others how to be safe, most of the group will never be safe because of their attitude towards others.

It's an age thing also, as they are all over 50 and drive large expensive cars, who am I to educate them? They would not listen to me anyway, I just keep away from them.

 Game shooters do NOT wear camo  .....shudder the thought.

You may see rough shooters in camo...

Wildfowlers and people stalking might use it if wanting to blend in..... but 'game shots' .....NEVER.... well not on proper shoots
I used to do a rough shoot back home and I was invited to a 400 pheasant a day shoot by a director at the firm my wife work in. I turns up in full cammo gear jesus the beaters were wearing tweeds ! :) One of the party comes over to me and says for gods sake don't go anywhere near the woods you are likely to get shot no one will be able to see you! Never asked back, shot a few of their birdies for nowt  though!   :)

This has got to be one of the most absorbing threads I have read through! Got everything fun, seriousness and prejudice. I have agreed ,laughed and shook my head great stuff!

Anyway we had a lot of gypsies coming to our shoot and most never held licences, insurance or memberships. One day there's this bloke shooting with his mate and ... what for it he's smoking a cigarette while he is shooting! Not only that between stots he retires to the back of the stand with his gun an leans against the gun rack. Two weeks later there was a notice saying all memberships and licences must be shown before shooting never seen them since. By the way I do not mean to offend anybody when I said gypsies there are many, many gipsies in France and I would be willing to bet that some of them are all right.

The latest edition to my collection was collected today , Beretta AL931 Urika 2 with Walnut .....beautifull £700 !

never seem the point of these flag things, if the bolts back its safe :)

i think its there to warn other shooters theres is a complete newbie with an auto
For what its worth every target rifle or pistol cartridge shooter is obliged to use breech flags to demonstrate visibly and at a distance that their gun is safe to fellow competitors and to range officers.  A broken shotgun is obviously visibly safe viewed from a distance.

Why should the users of semi-autos be any different in demonstrating that their gun is safe?

Kindly remember that a flag prevents the action from closing and potentially loading a round that might remain in the magazine and the gun is then immediately unsafe!

he's smoking a cigarette while he is shooting!
You ought to see the bloody great cigars I like to puff on whilst shooting Phezzies :D BTW a fag should always be placed in the opposite corner of the mouth from the stock else you burn your cheek when you get surprised by a pigeon coming into the decoys
