Bought a Jeep Cherokee in 97 still got it. Going to keep it 20 years then it will have only cost me a grand a year.
And if anyone ever moans about the C02 emissions of your "hulking great 4X4, you can appraise them of two motoring facts. 1 - Ask the question "What is the least polluting vehicle brand in the world"  And the Answer is Jeep.

This is because (2nd fact) Jeeps (for some strange reason) are the vehicle with the longest single ownership profile. And as the production of a car will emit FAR more C02 than it will ever emit in it's use. Keeping a car for it's entire useful life (whatever it emits) is the most eco friendly thing you can do.

ARRGH!! hand has been somewhat forced, L200 in an induced coma while I decide WTF to do with it. Mrs Bryn has just landed a new job (more hours better pay) so we need 2 vehicles NOW.

Just been to look at a ropey old Berlingo which at least looks as if it'll last 6 months, which will buy me time to 1. see if a van will do as a second/shooting vehicle, 2. get the L200 sorted so I can trade it in against a newer something or other.
Skoda Roomster?

Umm...... That would only work if Jeeps were the longest surviving cars in the world. The CO2 overhead of manufacture remains the same regardless of whom owns the vehicle. It doesn't incur any further CO2 overhead just because ownership changes hands!

By that measure I'd say there are some old mini's and beetles that have been around for 40 years or so that are still belting about. In terms of longest production run the Morris Oxford is still being produced as the Ambassador iirc in India. The Morgan 4/4 has been in production since 1936 and has a wooden substructure so it's particularly 'green' :)

Jeep Cherokees have only been in production since 1974 so they are babe's in the wood by comparison! :)

I agree that running a car for as long as it lasts is far better for the environment than all the incentives to change to a lower 'on-the-road' emissions vehicle.

If you're talking about individual cars, then you are of course correct. But I was talking about the entire production run. But I accept that 89.678% of statistics are made up on the spot

all you people with nice 4x4 bmw`s ,audi`s, evoque`s  and similar  Mayfair type wheels,,, I see that Halfords launched a new product for `xmas,, it`s `off-road` mud paint, for the wheels and rims,, so it looks like you went across a muddy field,,,  it`s an aerosol, about a tenner a wheel. :spiteful:

       just joking, a bit,,

your spellchecker seems to be faulty

Disco 4 commercial, reclaim the vat, RFL £235, BIK at 20% apporx £620, 3 year warranty, extend for £931 per year, absolutely love mine, if you are vat registered it is well worth a look.

you lost me here,,,,, dunno how else mud gets on a car,,, poured? thrown? splashed?

or a similar rude word,,,

Buying a can of stuff from a shop to make their Chelski tractor look as if its actually been off road is on a level with bean can exhausts and fluffy dice..................or cammo for shooting DTL

Anyway now I've got the ropey old van I'm finally getting chance to go off roading up to the Auldgirth shooting ground which will be a bit of an adventure in itself.....I may be gone some time.

borrowed my daughters fiat 500 the other week, had to fold the rear seats down to get the gun and bag in

got a few strange looks from other drivers, they must of been expecting to see a fit lady behind the wheel

not some ginger bloke with crazed look on his face, good fun though

Fifteen hundred quid for a Subaru Forester. What else do you need for a shooting car? Can't hurt it, never breaks down, goes almost anywhere but most of all - its totally classless. No snob value at all. Plus you have the warm cosy feeling that you are not losing ten grand a year in depreciation. Can't be wrong can it?

I've decided to get a new car (old crap car) as recently when going shooting I've got my A5 caked in mud inside and out and errr indoors isn't best pleased! so I was thinking what to get needs to be handle a bit of mud and crap, needs to be cheap so I thought i'm just going to end up with a sh*t car! so thats when it hit me if I make sure it's really sh*t and ugly as sin then I can have no real expectations and not really care! so I present

Daihatsu Fourtrack/Fieldsman are seriously good and pretty indestructable.

Mrs Bryn took my clapped out old Berlingo van for a spin to the recycling place yesterday, she was quite impressed so brought it back. Think we could be going for a new(ish?) one later in the year.
